LIMNAION
Thessaly, Greece.
A place mentioned by Livy alone among ancient authors, presumably
a temporary refuge in time of war or flood without continuous occupation; there are no known coins or inscriptions. It has been identified with a rocky hill called
Petromagoulo rising 250 m above the marshy plain, 2
km NW of Kortiki and on the opposite side of the Karditsis river. Double walls of rough polygonal masonry
filled with rubble surround the acropolis at the highest
point. There was a tower on the N side and a lower wall
of ashlar work.
