Berry, Hiram George, 1824-

Military officer; born in Thomaston (now Rockland), Me., Aug. 27, 1824; was first a carpenter, then a navigator, and finally became a State legislator and mayor of Rockland. He was colonel of Maine volunteers in the battle of Bull Run; became brigadier-general in May, 1862; and was active in the Army of the Potomac throughout the campaign on the Peninsula in 1862 and until the battle of Chancellorsville (May 2, 1863), were he was killed. His brigade was especially distinguished in the battle of Fredericksburg, in December, 1862. In March, 1863, he was made major-general of volunteers, and was commanding a division in the 3d Corps when he fell. [337]
