Purchas, Samuel 1577-1628

Clergyman; born in Thaxted, Essex, England, in 1577; is chiefly known by his famous work entitled Purchas his pilgrimages; or, relations of the world and the religion observed in all ages and places discovered from the creation until this present. It contains an account of voyages, religions, etc., and was published in five volumes in 1613. This, with Hakluyt's voyages, led the way to similar collections. The third volume relates to America, and contains the original narratives of the earliest English navigators and explorers of the North American continent. Purchas was rector of St. Martin's, Ludgate, and chaplain to Abbot, Archbishop of Canterbury. He died in London in 1628.
