Mary Universal
My name is Mary Bollhoefer Harberts and I have been an Elementary school teacher for 35
years. I have been a teacher with the Jesup Community School District in Jesup, Iowa for 28 of
those years. During those years I have known Shelby as a parent of one of my classroom
students, and teacher of pre-K and fourth grade. In these years I have watched her grow from a
parent that asked a lot of questions about her childs learning, to a teacher who truly wants the
best for every student academically and socially, to a woman who is working on a Masters
Degree in Educational Leadership.
Shelby has a vision of what a great administrator does for the district she serves and for the
teachers she supports. There is no doubt in my mind that Shelby would be driven to help all
levels of students, raising standardized test scores taking on the tough tasks to make sure that
things get done and done well. She is a leader who will forge a path for her teachers. She will be
there for her teachers to support them in new endeavors and yet be that strong source of
guidance that will be needed to run an elementary school. The intellectual ability of Shelby is
remarkable. She is a quick study.
Principals wear a variety of hats, often overseeing components of the school day that include
interacting with students, meeting parents, communicating with other districts and community
organizations and making sure that the district remains in compliance with legal
responsibilities. Shelby lives to the highest ethical and moral standards. Shelby has shown
throughout her job here at Jesup that she has a very positive way of working with staff and
students to help us work as one team. She has investigated how things are done in other schools
to share with her fourth grade team and other teachers in the elementary to help us meet state
standards. She has volunteered to serve whenever she can to help improve the learning
environment at our school by serving on the climate committee, child study team and the
Building Improvement Team. She has asked some very tough questions as a teacher as to why if
things werent working why did they remain the same. Shelby will be an administrator, who will
work diligently to make sure her students in the classrooms have rigorous and relevant lessons
and that the teachers are given the tools they needed to make those lessons happen.
In closing I would like to say how honored I am to speak of the great potential of this young
woman. After all the years I have taught I have worked for many administrators, but it would be
my privilege for Shelby to be my principal.
Sincerely yours,
