Ism Research Assignment

This document discusses several key points about injury prevention: - Core strength is important for preventing lower body injuries in athletes like football players. Exercises need to strengthen the core, hips, and trunk. - Plyometrics and agility exercises can prevent injuries like ACL tears when incorporated properly with coaching guidance on form. - Programs like Sportsmetrics use dynamic warmups, plyometrics, strength training, flexibility, and agility exercises over 6 weeks to reduce injuries. They also have tests to identify injury risks. - ACL tears often occur from sudden movements and can be diagnosed and repaired through surgery, with rehabilitation involving bracing, crutches, elevation, and medications for pain and swelling.

"Key Elements of Injury Prevention." FIFA RSS2. FIFA 11+, n.d. Web. 02 Oct. 2016.
The core (abdominal muscles) is the main function for all lower muscle
movements
Core strength is a key to injury prevention of the lower body; example: football
players
Football players must possess sufficient strength and neuromuscular control in
their hip and trunk muscles to provide core stability (paragraph 2, page 10)
Control of neuromuscular movements is the interaction of stability, coordination,
balance, body posture, etc.
There have been studies showing evidence on neuromuscular specified exercise
programs potentially help injury preventions
Plyometrics: exercises that enable a muscle to reach maximum strength in as
short a time a time as possible. (paragraph 4, page 10)
Plyometric exercises goal is to lower the time between slowing down abnormal
muscle contractions and overpowering muscle shortening contraction
By applying plyometrics, athletes can add exercises to specific motion formats or
patterns to further strengthen all components of a muscle and surrounding
structures.
Studies have shown ACL injuries and addition injuries of the knee have been
prevented by the inclusion of plyometrics and agility exercises
In order for these drills and the promotion of plyometric, agility and
neuromuscular exercises to be successful for any athlete, the coach and player
must have full knowledge of the drills and understand how this process effects
their performance and results
Starting with the basics is the most successful place to start; body mechanics
Position of the body is crucial during the types of exercises listed above because
the result depends on the positioning
This article goes into how a coach or anyone can create a successful injury
prevention exercise giving example steps to follow
These examples including the application of repetition so that an athlete can
This source gave insight to the types of exercises needed for injury prevention, specifying
on the lower extremities and the cores overall importance.

Noyes, Dr. Frank R., M.D. Sportsmetrics. The Cincinnati SportsMedicine and Orthopedic
Center, n.d. Web. 29 Sept. 2016.

Sportsmetrics Techniques and Training was founded and designed to train athletes
under specific exercises for their sport
The program constructed by Sportsmetrics is designed to last a minimum of six
weeks
The program was designed to reduce female knee injuries by improving quad and
hamstring strength
This strengthening program is constructed by plyometric, strengthening flexibility
and dynamic warm-up exercises
Sportsmetrics includes a program known as WIPP: Warm-up for Injury Prevention
and Performance
The WIPP program is designed to prepare the muscles to perform at their fullest
potential
WIPP includes Sportsmetricss main components (dynamic, plyometric, strength,
flexibility and agility) and is totaled to be 20 minutes
WIPP encourages athletes most commonly known to jump, twist, land, etc.
The muscles that WIPP concentrates on the most common group of muscles
injured including the hamstrings and low back.
Sportsmetrics also go into a Knee Injury Test
This test is broken down into four individual tests to see if an athlete is at risk for
any knee damage
The Drop Jump Tests determines potential damage by an athletes alignment of the
knee as the land after jumping. By identifying wrong technique and form, the
athlete can change their mechanics to improve risks.
The Triple Hop Stability Test determines potential damage by identifying improper
balance and proprioception, or the sense of position
The Triple Hop Limb Symmetry Test determines potential damage by testing
distance hopped per limb
The Single Leg Squat Test determines potential damage by identification of
deficiency in hip strength
This source gives explanation on a program/organization which helps prevent injuries and
also is a resource for tests and ways to identify potential injuries

King, Dr. Warren, M.D. "ACL Tears and Reconstruction."SutterHealth.org. SutterHealth,

n.d. Web. 29 Sept. 2016
ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injuries are the most common knee ligament
injuries
ACL injuries are most commonly caused by fast stop-and-go movements, change
in directions, landing from a jump incorrectly
These causes of injuries are mostly seen in football, basketball, soccer and other
twisting and jumping involved sports
ACL tears are diagnosed by physical examination and MRI examination
There are instances of ACL tears being able to heal without surgery, commonly
seen in less active, elderly individuals
ACL tear reconstruction surgeries are performed by Orthopedic Surgeons
There are two types of ACL repair surgeries
Autograft ACL reconstruction: use of hamstring tendons for reconstruction
Allograft ACL reconstruction: human donor tendons for reconstruction. Uses the
patellar and Achilles tendon
Studies have shown that if an ACL injury is not followed up by a surgery or rehab,
within 5 years post injury, the patient will have additional damage within the knee
due to lack of stability
During surgery, the surgeon will take parts of the tendon and construct a new
ligament
The tendon is then screwed back to the bone with biodegradable screws so the
knee does not have to be opened back up for removal
The surgical process is done using a arthroscope and a small camera
After surgery is completed, the patient is sewn up
After surgery, ice is encouraged along with a brace and crutches to control
swelling
After surgery is completed, elevation of the leg is crucial to alleviate swelling
Anti-inflammatories and pain relief medication is encouraged to take as long as
there is pain
High-dosage pain medication may be prescribed and monitored by physicians for
a few weeks after surgery
This source goes into depth about how an ACL injury may occur, what type of rehab or
surgery may be needed after injury is diagnosed and what is needed to happen for a
patient after surgery.

Gutierrez, Graciela. "Knee Health and Running." Agexplorer.com. Baylor College of

Medicine, 14 Nov. 2014. Web. 29 Sept. 2016.
Introduction of whether running hurts or aids the knee over time
Study undergone by Dr. Grace Hsiao-Wei Lo, shows the effect of running
regularly, does not damage the knee over time, no matter your age
The damage Dr. Lo specifies is osteoarthritis, degeneration of the cartilage
surrounding the bone
Osteoarthritis is increased by too much weight, stress, improper rehab of an injury
Research for the effects of running and the damage completed by osteoarthritis on
male runners
The results showed that runners have a decrease in their BMI (body mass index)
compared to the average person which gives protection against osteoarthritis
The question How does habitual running differ on knee OA versus leisure
running? and Dr. Lo took control by taking about 2,500 participants to study their
habitual running routines which twenty-nine percent exclaimed they ran at some
point of their life
Dr. Lo then conducted knee x-rays, surveys and symptom evaluation
Measurements of knee pain were also taken for a starting point
After the results came in, researchers found runners, no matter their age, have a
decreased knee pain complaint than those who do not run
In conclusion, the researchers found that if anyone in their lives run for even the
smallest amount, they may be able to not only decrease osteoarthritis develop but
may be able to prevent it completely and the deterioration caused by the disease
This resource goes into one of the most common knee damaging diseases other than
injuries known in athletes, the results of the research described shows that act of running
helps prevent developing osteoarthritis.
