Iron Ore and Zn-Cu-Pb Mineralization at The Jangkat Region, South Sumatra, Indonesia

The document summarizes a study of iron ore and Zn-Cu-Pb mineralization in the Jangkat region of South Sumatra, Indonesia. Petrographic and geochemical analyses revealed the rocks consist mainly of quartz, plagioclase, and authigenic minerals, suggesting the presence of granitic rocks. Geochemical data from the granites indicates depletion in some elements and that the magmas were generated from subduction of the Indo-Australia plate under the Eurasian plate. Mineralization appears controlled by tectonic structures and relates to sulfide liquids, characterized by skarn or iron oxide mineralization associated with granitic intrusion.

IRON ORE AND Zn-Cu-Pb MINERALIZATION AT THE JANGKAT

REGION, SOUTH SUMATRA, INDONESIA

D. Sasmita., A. Ariani E. Sutriyono

Abstract—Studies on iron ore and Zn-Cu-Pb mineralization have
been conducted at Jangkat, South Sumatra. Tectonically, the region is
situated within the western site of Paleogene South Sumatra basin.
The area comprises of Cretaceous suquences, consisting of Peneta
Formation, Rawas Formation, and Granite Arai Formation. The
present study employed petrographic and geochemical analyses to
characterize the pattern of mineralization and types of alteration.
Petrographic sections reveal that the analysed rocks predominantly
consist of quartz, plagioclase, muscovite, pyroxene, horblende, and
authigenic minerals. This mineral assemblege suggests the presence
of granitic rocks in the region. Whereas geochemical data gained
from granites show that there is a significant decrease in Ti, Nb, and
P contents. The data also indicate that the samples rocks are kalk-
alkaline (K2O/Na2O = 0,11-1,5), suggesting that magmas generated
from a subducting slab of Indo-Australia plate underneath Eurasian
plate. More importantly, the pattern of mineralization appears to have
been controlled by tectonic structures and relates closely to sulfide
liquids. Hence, the region is characterized by fositerite or scarn
mineralization associated with granitic intrusion
