Chapter 1

Problem and Background

“Education is not just about going to school and getting a degree. It’s about

widening your knowledge and absorbing the truth about life.”

- Shakuntala Devi

Introduction

Education is an important global-service for the society throughout

the years. In order to help the development of economic in every countries,

the government focuses on implementing higher education for the citizens.

As time goes by and with the improvement of people living standards and

cultural quality, peoples’ awareness about the importance of education

increases.

Because of this, the government of the Philippines decided to

established laws that can support higher education for the people without

spending too much on their financial concerns. Some implemented law about

education, is the Republic act (RA) 10648 (“Iskolar ng Bayan Act of 2014”)

on which the law, mandates all the state universities and colleges to admit

and provide scholarship grants to the top 10 public high-school graduates

subject to some requirements and conditions provided by the law and

implementing rules and regulations to be formulated by the Commission on

Higher Education (CHED) and the Department of Education (Toni Umali,

2015). Furthermore, it is a big help for the society to continue their education

and be successful to their field of study.

As these laws established, it is also important for students to examine

which school has the capability to offer excellence image to the society, good

performances and a higher education for students to continue their study and

choose what institutions or universities they look up to. The factors in

Marketing Strategies of different schools are considered as a huge aspect for

students to look for the best “Alma Mater”. As this grows, the institutions,

universities and colleges, competes to the market with their own tactics by

making schools advertisement and improving their market strategy. All

schools administrations’ main focus is to approach people especially the

parents and the students because understanding the students’ decision

making is very important for institution administrator in the competition

situation (Dao and Thorpe, 2015; Lau, 2016).

The purpose of this quantitative study aims to find out the factors in

marketing strategies of schools that exert influence on students’ decisions

while considering their desired school especially, in the college year level.

And also, it aims to look for the students’ personal factors that are highly

influencing their decision making.

The study will also benefit the school administrations because they

will know how to strengthen more their market strategy by considering the

viewpoint of the students.

Statement of the problem

The quantitative research study aims to analyze the factors that

affects the students’ decision to be considered by the Grade 12

Accountancy, Business and Management students in Technological Institute

of the Philippines.

Specially, it seeks answers to the following questions:

1. What are the marketing factors of schools that students

considered in choosing their institution?

2. What are the personal factors of students that affects the

selection of their institution in college?

3. Does the schools’ marketing strategies like, advertisement on

social media, fliers, brochure, commercials on TV and billboards

plays a big role in influencing the students’ decisions on

choosing their school?

Scope and Delimitations of the Study

This study is focused mainly on analyzing the factors affecting the

students’ choices of schools for college.

The respondents of this quantitative study are limited only to senior

high school students exclusively on the Grade 12 - Accountancy, Business

and Management students studying at Technological Institute of the

Philippines Quezon City. Any information that is not related to the topic given

by the respondents will not be included to the information that gathered. It is

also regulated under given time frame which will be accomplished in their

respective school.

Significance and Context of the Study

In this generation, different factors affect the students’ choice when

choosing a school.

The purpose of this study is to determine the factors that influence

the students on their choice of institutions for higher learning or

professional course of study.

This study will benefit the following:

1. Students - This study will tackle the factors that influence them

when choosing a school. The results will provide the students with

some knowledge about the factors that may affect them. It will give

the students’ a realization that different factors have different

impact on them while making decisions about which school to

choose. It will also enhance their capability of applying those

factors in real life. At the end of this study, students’ will finally know

what factors have the biggest and least impact on their choices.

2. Parents - This study will provide information to enlighten and give

insights for the students and parents the factors that affects their

childrens’ choices in choosing a school for college. The parents will

also understand why their children choose that school through the

given data.

3. School Administration - The school will benefit if the research will

be published and it will increase the schools’ credibility. This will

also help them to improve their system and different transactions

made in their respective areas and with that being said, they will be

able to encourage their current students to stay and other students

to enroll.

4. Future Researchers - If they will come up with this kind of study,

they will have an idea or they can use this study about this topic for

the further improvement. Future researchers can also use this as

their cross-reference for background and overview of the said topic.
