Chapter I

THE AUTHOR AND ITS LITERARY WORK

Introduction

Literature being an art form used for expression, also preserves cultural ideals, customs,
and morals. The written word gives us a deeper context into the lives and livelihood of people
distinct from ourselves. This can be true of historical literature but is equally true of modern
literature, as well. We can learn as much from William Shakespeare’s time through his plays as
we can from different authors from a different mindset and wide imagination.

Philippine literature is the art of written work. The world literature literally means “things
made from letters”. Literature is commonly classified as having two major forms fiction and non-
fiction, and two major techniques which is poetry and prose. However, through the study of
Philippine literature, we can trace our rich heritage of ideas and handed down to us from our
ancestors. Realize literary limitations conditioned by certain historical factors and we can take
steps to overcome them. Manifest our deep concern for our own literature. Literature describing
the historical, social, tragic, and common events that is present in modernize world. In todays’
literature it is interesting for the reader, reading such daring and erotic yet realistic. Readers
eventually enjoying the scenery since this can reflect what is really happening in society. One of
the poem that describes and reflect the readers mind into erotic and realistic imagination is the
poem “Dyugdyugan” written by Lualhati Bautista. With the ability to see the world with a pair of
fresh eyes, it triggers thye reader to reflect upon their own lives (Hobbes, 2018)

Dyugdyugan is a poem that talks about insecurities and foolishness of a women. This poem
the girl complained about her imperfections and think about that she has no more to offer but only
her whole body. Insecurities driven sometimes our emotional needs were in doing something
which what makes us valuable. Insecurities sometimes made us desperate and we do it without
thinking back. This poem shows the reality about women which they are fragile, vulnerable and
need the companionship of a man. Specifically, it describes a type of women who is mentally and
emotionally fool. This kind of poem will catch the attention of every woman were in the idea that
presents in the are prevalent in today’s happening.

This study aims to determine women’s insecurities and foolishness wherever in the world.
There were so many literary pieces in the world but the researcher find out and have chosen this
one that she knows everyone in today’s generation can reflect. And cut across the immeasurable
boundaries of its day, and for whatever these are worth in the education of a future generation.

In addition, the world today is ever changing. Never before has life been so chaotic and
challenging for all. Life before literature was practical and predictable, but in present day, literature
has expanded into countless libraries and into the minds of many as the gateway for comprehension
and curiosity of the human mind and the world around them (Hobbes, 2018). Therefore, the author
of the poem “Dyugdyugan” emerges from the past and present works is not only the product of
imagination, but a level of realism which, for all intents and purposes breaks the mold of current-
day today’s event and happenings. Bautista always been conscious of women’s issues. Believing
that girls were largely frowned upon facing our culture, the belief that every woman cannot choose
their suitors (laughs). According to Salud (2018) Bautista stands for women’s rights and issues
while the same women laugh at his sexist jokes is a difficult task. This pushes women’s
consciousness back several decades.
