Student Exploration: Cell Energy Cycle

Gizmo Warm-up
The Cell Energy Cycle Gizmo™ illustrates two
processes that are essential to life: photosynthesis
and cellular respiration.

Although both of these processes involve a series of

complex steps, the inputs and outputs of each process
are four relatively simple molecules.

1. What is the chemical formula of oxygen?

_O2______

2. Glucose is a simple sugar. What is the chemical

formula of glucose?

_____C6H12O6____________________

3. What is the chemical formula of carbon dioxide? _CO2______

4. What is the chemical formula of water? ___H2O____

Activity C: Get the Gizmo ready:
The carbon-  Click Reset.
oxygen cycle  Select the CYCLE tab.

Question: How is photosynthesis related to cellular respiration?

1. Form a hypothesis: How do you think photosynthesis is related to cellular respiration?

____Both use the sun

2. Predict: Look at the red arrows, and think about the photosynthesis and respiration
processes. Each red arrow connects a set of inputs to the outputs of the reaction.

A. Which molecules would you expect to find at the top of the diagram? Explain.

__Photosynthesis would be on top, The arrows are going different ways in a circle.

___________________________________________________________________

B. Which molecules would you expect to find at the bottom of the diagram? Explain.

_Respiration because it is going down where the arrow is pointing.

3. Observe: Drag the Oxygen, Glucose, Carbon dioxide, and Water into the CYCLE pane.

A. Which substances are inputs in photosynthesis? __carbon dioxide__________

__Water__________

B. Which substances are outputs of photosynthesis? _____oxygen_______

___glucose_________

C. Which substances are inputs in respiration? ____glucose________

___oxygen_________

D. Which substances are outputs of respiration? ____water ________ __carbon

dioxide__________

4. Compare: How are the inputs and outputs of photosynthesis and respiration related to one
another?
___They use the same ones only different times.

5. Review: In photosynthesis and respiration, energy is converted from one form to another.
Light is a form of radiant energy. Glucose and ATP molecules store chemical energy.

A. During photosynthesis, what role is played by the radiant energy of the Sun? Explain

your answer. __It is the suns energy.___

___________________________________________________________________

B. In photosynthesis, what form of energy is sunlight converted to, and how is this

energy stored? ___Chemical energy and stored in

chloroplasts____________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________

C. Does cellular respiration result in a net input of energy or a net output of energy?

Explain. __ net output because cells convert glucose and oxygen into carbon

dioxide and water.

___________________________________________________________________

D. How is the energy produced by respiration stored? _By having it be converted to

carbon dioxide and water_________________________

6. Summarize: How are respiration and photosynthesis related to each other? _____________

____ Photosynthesis converts carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and glucose .
And  Cellular respiration converts oxygen and glucose into water and carbon
dioxide.__________________________________________________________________
___

_________________________________________________________________________

7. Think and discuss: In what ways are plants and animals dependent on each other?
___Plants produce stuff for animals to eat and animals help make plants by eating them and
having them grow more stuff and nutrients.  Cellular respiration converts oxygen and
glucose into water and carbon dioxide
