AN ANALYSIS THE DIFFICULTIES IN SPEAKING CLASS FOR THE STUDENTS OF

THIRD SEMESTER FROM ENGLISH DEPARTMENT AT TIDAR UNIVERSITY IN

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, the writer tries to show about background of the study, identification of the

problem, limitation of the problem, formulation of the problem, objectives of the study, and the

significance of the study.

A. Background of The Study

Speaking is one of the most important skill to be acquired for the students since speaking

is generally perceive as the basic skill (Aleksandrzak,2011). It means that speaking is crucial

thing before the students continue to the next level such as public speaking, English debate and

critical thinking, and reflective micro teaching. As Sibai cited in Hosni (2014), we live at the

time where the ability to speak English fluently has become a must, especially for who want to

advance in certain fields of English education. Every students of English Department have to

attain good speaking capability standard because they are not only demanded to teach their

students in the future but they also use English as an intermediate language in their courses as

well. They also have to present their final project in English as well to present the result they

studied in the campus.

In speaking, students are not only required to use grammar correctly or have good

pronunciation and vocabulary, they also demanded to know knowledge about how to use

language. Hinkel (2005) claims communication problems occur because students find words

they do not understand, forms of words they do not know how to use or find that they cannot

express the intended meaning. Another problem that arises in students' speaking is a lack of self-
confidence and anxiety. Speaking skill in a foreign language is a challenge for the students

because to speak a foreign language such as English requires more than knowing grammar but

also the use of English in a real context. As Qurnia (2015) stated that grammar, pronunciation ,

and vocabulary are vital points for the English Learners to improve their ability in English. With

knowing the structure, concept and how to use language, pupil can easy to understand English

well. The students also demand to use right pronunciation in order to avoid miscommunication

with other people. According to Syafriadin (in Qurnia, 2015) students got stuck when speak

English because they did not know what they want to say. Pupils made a mistake like poor

vocabularies and grammatical errors. They also mix English and Indonesia when they don’t

know the vocabularies. Based on what is stated by Syafriadin (2013), it can be shown that there

are some aspect should be solved in order to help the learners to acquire good English speaking

as well.

According to Doris and Jessica (2007), language problems have a function as one of the

important reasons behind the poor academic performance. These problems can become

obstacles for students to improve their speaking skills. The reason students experience problems

speaking is that they lack grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. These problems belong to

linguistic problems. These problems make students' speaking abilities worse. Another problem

that might be a barrier for students to become good speakers of English is psychological

problems. Xinghua (2007) states that psychological problems are problems that often interfere

with your emotional and physical health in, your relationships, work productivity, or life

adjustments such as nervousness, lack of confidence and fear of speaking. These problems can

cause difficulties in speaking skills. Psychological problems are those problems, which often
interfere with emotional or physical health. This psychological problem can have a negative

effect on students' speaking performance.

Tidar University is one of University in Magelang. It is located in Jl. Kapten Suparman

No. 39, Tuguran, Potrobangsan, Magelang Utara, Kota Magelang. The ___location is strategies,

because the university on the right street and the public transportations are easy to acess. There

are 5 faculties in this university. They are faculty of economics, faculty of education and teachers

training, faculty of engineering, faculty of agriculture,and faculty of social and political sceinces.

The researcher focuses in the students of third semester of English department. Based on the

results of observations in English Department at Tidar University, researchers concluded that

students still have difficulty in direct interaction using English. Students still can not say a word

with good pronunciation, lack of vocabulary, and mother tongue. They sometimes choose to

silent because they cannot express what will be discussed, they also often use fillers, when they

speak in front of the class they felt nervous, shy, and and some of them still find difficulties to

speak English. In the class, students required to communicate using English but it is not easy for

students. As Barker says "Communication is the act of transmitting and receiving information.

So from the demands that many students are looking for ways to communicate well with English.

Since the Third Semester Students of English Department at Tidar University are the

English foreign learners (EFL) they may face certain problems that keep themselves cannot

speak English better. Students in the third level also have to prepare their self for practising

teaching in the seventh semester. Within this research, the researcher want to find out what are

the difficulties in speaking and how to overcome these problems. Based on the results of the

description above the researcher interested to analyze the student's difficulties in speaking or

communicating using English by taking the title of research: " An Analysis the difficulties in
speaking skill for the students of third semester from English department at Tidar University in

the academic year 2019/2020”

B. Identification of the Problem

Based on the background of the study above the researcher concluded that there are some

problems to learn English, such as :

 The students get difficult in speaking English

 The students need strategy in solving the speaking difficulties.

C. Limitation of the Problem

There were some limitation of this study. First, the subjects of the study were the students of

English department at Tidar University. Second, there were 16 participants as the sample of the

study, who were the students from public speaking class, four students from class 1, four

students from class 2, four students from class 3, and four students from class 4. Third, the

researcher focuses to describe what are the students problems on speaking English, and how to

overcome the speaking difficulties. Fourth, the researcher used qualitative design in this

research. The data collections were collected by using interview and questionnaire.

D. Formulation of the Problem

1. What are the difficulties in speaking English faced by students in the third semester of

English department at Tidar University?

2. What are the strategies to solve student's difficulties in speaking English for the third

semester students in English Departement at Tidar University?

E. Objectives of the Study


According to the statement of the problems above, the researcher has the purpose appropriate to

the background of the study, the purpose of this research as follows:

1. To find out the difficulties utilized by student's in speaking English.

2. To know the strategies to overcome the speaking difficulties.

F. Significance of the Study

This study will provide benefits for the students, lecturer, and the reader.

As for the students the result of research can help the students to:

1. Know the difficulties in speaking English.

2. Help the students to overcome the difficulties in speaking English.

3. Make the students dare to use English to communicate without any constraints.

As for lecturer, among others, can help them to:

1. Know the difficulties of the students in speaking English so that the lecturer can use

appropriate strategies in dealing with the difficulties of speaking English.

2. Teach the students with right strategies and may find new ways of teaching speaking for

the students.

As for the reader, among others :

1. Give information about students difficulties in speaking English and know the strategies

to overcome these problems.

2. As the references in conducting the research and give more updated data.
