Jamila : How about the area, Julia? Was it heavily destroyed by the
construction? And why is this a protected area?
Garcia : Yes Kennah. It was completely destroyed. Large trees were cut
down, and the soil was dug deep. This area is a protected forest that has
been a habitat for animals and other organisms. This place is where a rare
species is also located, but because of the construction, this caused chaos
and disturbance to the habitat. People resented the general contractor
because they cared for the forest dearly.
Laurence : I don’t know what came to his mind to destroy such beautiful
habitat. Tsk, tsk! We people hope that he will regret the destruction that
he did to the nature!
Jamila : Thank you very much, Julia Garcia, reporting from Iligan City.
Deforestation
Cañete : Viral now on social media are people rallying on the streets here
in Davao City. But not just people, but students from Davao City Special
National High School, rallying not to cause violence but to spread
awareness of heavy human activities, especially deforestation. Live now
from Davao City, reporting from Ethan Ranalan.
Ethan?
Ranalan : Are you tired of walking and standing, shouting in the streets?
Mante : Yes, I am tired, we are tired, but since the main reason why this
is all happening is because of us, right now, we will do everything in our
power to make small changes.
Alcoseba : I joined this rally for the betterment of the world. We have
abused our environment too much, and I can't just sit down and do
nothing. Although I am visually impaired, this can't stop me from
spreading awareness because I want change! We want change!
Ranalan : What's your message to our fellow Filipinos and to the world,
Stiffany?
Mante : Stop deforestation! Stop burning our trees! Stop the illegal
logging! Stop the conversion of agricultural lands to housing projects!
Because by avoiding these things, we can prevent forest fires! Our forest
can restore its beauty. Come on, people, it's 2022! Open your eyes and
make some moves! Don't wait for Mother Nature to turn the table all the
way!
Alexes?
Cañete : Thank you very much, Ethan Ranalan, reporting from Talomo
Bangkal, Davao City.
Wildlife Depletion
Cañete : Scientists and zoologists are now really worried because of the
increasing speed of wildlife depletion in the Philippines. According to
BirdLife International, 2021, "today, 93 (36%) endemic species are
threatened with extinction in the Philippine Archipelago. A 10% increase
in the number of endemic birds is facing extinction in these islands in just
under a decade." Live now from the Philippine Eagle Santuary, reporting
from Mhiles Udtohan.
Udtohan : So, Ms. Eunice, what will be your message to the people of the
Philippines and to the world?
Udtohan : Thank you Ms. Eunice. This is Mhiles Udtohan. Back to you,
Alexes.
Cañete : Thank you very much Mhiles, reporting from Philippine Eagle
Sanctuary.
Water Pollution
Jamila : Trash and dead fish from the sea washed up on the
shores.Because of this, it leads to citizens living on coastal or near sea
shores getting sick and particularly getting dengue. Live now from
Manila's coastal area, reporting from Mhiles Udtohan.
Udtohan : Yes, Jamila. Individuals right now here in the coastal area are
getting dengue because of the trash that was washed out by the sea. As
the sea continues to wash out trash, layers upon layers of trash are being
stacked on sea shores. Not only is trash washed up on the shore, but also
dead fish. Many fishermen are having a hard time catching because of the
trash stacking up on shores and how fish are also dying.
We were scared and shocked because there was so much trash and dead
fish being washed out of the shore. People here are really suffering
because not only does this give dengue, but it also really smells bad here.
Goverment officials have been already alarmed with the situation and will
immediately conduct thorough shore and sea cleaning. in order to avoid
more cases of people getting dengue.
Bajao: This saddens me because people who live near coastal areas
complain about how unhealthy the environment is when the truth is that
they are the only ones to blame. What really bothers me is that they
would constantly throw trash into the sea, but when mother nature only
returned what they threw, they would complain. As an environmentalist, I
am really disappointed, not only for the people living in coastal areas but
also for all of us. We were entrusted with nature, but all we did was to
abuse and mistreat it. This, I believe, is a problem caused by us rather
than by nature. We were the ones responsible. We were the ones making
this happen, so we must expect the consequences of our actions. I think
that we should start opening our eyes and seeing what we've done to the
Earth. Water pollution is a serious problem in our country, and so
managing our own trash responsibly by throwing it in the right trash can
help prevent an occurrence like this.
Jamila : Thank you very much, Mhiles, reporting from Manila coastal
areas.
