What is It
Have you found studying literature more exciting with multimedia supports where
you can actively and collaboratively build knowledge structures using technology?
Evidently, most of the learners like you have realized the huge impact of the use of
multimedia in studying literature. It provides opportunities for learners like you to
construct and reconstruct your ideas in audio and visual formats. Through
multimedia platforms, you can apply a wide range of strategies to understand,
interpret and evaluate texts. Marshall (2001) defined multimedia as computer-
controlled integration of text, graphics, drawings, still and moving images (video),
animation, audio, and any other media where every type of information can be

represented, stored, transmitted and processed digitally. Here are some of the

What is It
Have you experience writing your own memoir? How is it different from writing a
journal or diary?
The word memoir came from Anglo French “memorie” which means note,
memorandum or something to be kept in mind, and from Latin word “memoria”
meaning to remember. (etymonline.com)
A memoir is form of narrative writing which the writer explores a particular part of
his/her life. Subjects may include; events, people, places, success and failures. It
describes the events and then shows, either directly or indirectly, why they are
significant. It is focused in time; doesn't cover a great span of years unlike in
autobiography.
How do you write a good memoir? You should remember the following pointers.
• Connects to the audience
• Is in 1st person point of view
• features a hook/lead that grabs the reader’s attention immediately
• “shows” doesn’t just “tell” by using descriptive language
• Uses dialogue
• Expresses the author’s thoughts and feelings
• Reveals the importance of the memory to the reader
Formatting a Memoir
• The beginning provides the reader with any necessary information about
who, what, when, where, why, or how.
• The middle outlines a series of events presented in chronological order.
• The end provides a personal reaction to the memory- i.e. what was learned
or gained from the experience.

this time Sayuri is struggling with the common life lessons learned when one is
growing up into a young woman. It is very much a coming of age story. Through
all trials of adversity Sayuri faces her one goal is always to see the face of The
Chairman.
Finally the day comes when she is invited, along with Mameha, to a party
at a teahouse at which The Chairman is attending. For the next couple of weeks,
she attends multiple parties which the chairman attend all the while seemingly
coming closer to her goal. Tension has been growing concerning World War II and
the society in Gion is beginning to feel the effects of war. Rations are set up and
many parts of the geisha district have begun to close. Geisha are fleeing to other
parts of the country hoping to avoid getting caught in an attack. Sayuri and all of
her friends are split apart after the war and once everyone returns to Gion it is
realized the effects of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
All geisha who fled to these cities obviously died and it is a loss greatly felt
by the community. Sayuri desperately attempts to attain the love of the Chairman
and the climax of the story is whether or not she does meet her goal.
What’s More
Directions. Arrange the important events from the Memoirs of a Geisha. Put
numbers from 1-8 on the box. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.
Chiyo and her sister Satsu, are taken away from their parents by Mr.
Tanaka to become geishas.
Satsu and Chiyo are separated from each other (because they are taken to
two different geisha homes)
The sisters eventually find each other and come up with a plan to run away,
but Satsu runs off with a boy instead.
Mameha makes Chiyo her “little sister” and Hatsumomo does the same
with Pumpkin.
Several men compete to win Sayuri’s virginity, which will hopefully clear all
her debts.
More men compete for Sayuri, but this time, it is for becoming her danna
(wealthy man who provides for a geisha)
Hatsumomo is no longer a part of Sayuri’s life, so Sayuri can’t be harmed
by her anymore.
The chairman tells Sayuri about his feelings for her.
