Reinforcing derivation rules:

Noun (N.), adjective (adj.), verb (v.), adverb (adv.)

Nouns can be found in the following positions in the sentence:

1. At the beginning of a sentence as a subject:


( Noun + verb + ): curiosity killed the man.
bullying has increased considerably.

2. As an object that follows a verb

(subject + verb + Noun + complement)


Example:
Success needs motivation.
She needs patience .

3. After quantifiers [few, a few, little, a little, some, any all, many, a lot of, much, plenty of,
several, no]
Example:
This exercise needs much concentration on the details.
We have a few problems with the new car.

4. After demonstratives:[ this, that, these, those]

This decision mad a huge change.


The headmaster has made these improvements .

5. After adjectives:
They have made miserable mistakes.
He must give a good description of the picture.

6. After prepositions [under, with, on, in, at, from, for, without, over, trough, after,
before…etc. ]
He suffer a lot from carelessness.
She writes a piece of composition.
7. After articles [a, an, the]
The advertisement was great.
The meeting will begin soon.

8. After possessive adjectives: [my, your , our, its, her, his, their]

Adjective

Adjectives can be found in the following positions in the sentence:

1. After the verb (be) when it is the main verb in a sentence :


[ is , am ,are , was ,were , been ]
This is amazing .
He is famous .

2. After the following verbs:


[sound, feel, taste, get, look, seem, smell, become]

She looks impressive in her new hairstyle.


My friend seems talented.

3. Before nouns
He will face a dangerous situation .
Petra is a famous city in Jordan.

Study the following structure: ( [a , an , the] + adjective + Noun ]

4. After the following words: [extremely, definitely, very, too, quite, so]
I She is very enthusiastic . / I was extremely tired.

5. In the following structures:


a- After superlatives:
- The most important. / The least brilliant.
b- (As+adjective+as)
- It is as comfortable as your car.
c- ( more + Adjective + than)
- English is more important than history.

Verbs
Where can we find the verb in the sentence?
1. After the subject
( I, he, she , it, we, you, they,) or nouns
e.g. – They knew the answer

2. After (to ) + infinitive verb


( so as to \ in order to\ to )
e.g.- We decided to show the truth.

3. After the modal verbs ( modals)


(will ,can ,could , must ,may, might , would , should , shall, have to, has to,………etc .)
e.g. -We should improve our language.

4- After the verb to do ( do , does, did ,don't, doesn't, didn't)


e.g.-He didn’t stay at home.

5- After (let's \ let us)


e.g. - Let's go outside.

6. Imperative sentences.
e.g. – Open the door. / Don’t go.

7. Before the adverb


e.g.- He performs perfectly. / The soldiers fought bravely

Adverbs:
The adverb: (ly) is the normal end of the adverb → (Adj + ly = adv )
The adverb describes the verb
-ly quickly, dangerously, hastily, carefully, surprisingly, successfully heavily, completely,
luckily.

Adverbs can be found in the following positions in the sentences:

1-. After the verb to describe it


e.g. The rain fell heavily yesterday. / My brother drove slowly.

2-. Before the adjective.


e.g. This exercise is extremely difficult.

3- Between the helping verb and the main verb


e.g. . He has creatively done his work.

4-. Sometimes we use the adverb in the beginning of the sentence ; in this case a comma (,)
must follow the adverb.
e.g. Ironically, They had given rewarding prizes.
