Chapter 1
Introduction
I. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
A lot of students nowadays enjoy joining co-curricular activities that could affect their

academic performance. While students may not notice it, doing co-curricular activities does have

a big impact on their academic performance. Although, certain students can manage and do good

on both co-curricular activities and academic performance. Co-curricular activities do need a lot

of time and could affect academic performance.

Studies have shown that students pursuing their hobbies achieved better results in their

studies. Likewise, their academic performance goes way up as they learn to balance their co-

curricular activities with their academic pursuits. They also better understand how to manage

their time efficiently and increase their interest in school. Therefore, it is essential to understand

the importance of co-curricular activities in improving academic performance.

Students are exposed to a whole new range of activities that improve their understanding

and allow them to select the subjects and activities they are interested in learning. Stated

differently, it opens new possibilities for them. Students' speaking, dancing, singing, acting,

painting, and many other skills are stimulated by these activities. Co-curricular activities

therefore extend students’ learning and activity exploration horizons. Co-curricular activities are

therefore quite important in this regard.

Co-curricular activities can enforce all round personality development of students. It can

also make the learners mentally agile, participative, responsive, confident, and independent. An

illustration through a case in point enables understanding of the importance of co-curricular

activities and how they prove to be beneficial for learners in academic performance. (Elsevier,

2023)

Co-curricular activities in school help to enhance the overall personality of the students.

These prepare them to take challenges heads up and enable them to think critically. Moreover,

experiences and skills acquired through these co-curricular activities make students proactive

and prepared for their future endeavors. Therefore, the importance of co-curricular activities

cannot be denied in overall personality development.

Co-curricular activities guide students on how to organize and present an activity,

develop skills, and co-operate and coordinate in different situations- all these help in leadership

qualities. It also provides avenues of socialization, self-identification, and self-assessment when

the child meets organizers, fellow participants, teachers, and people outside the school during

cultural activity. (Gyan, 2023)

Also, co-curricular activities require students to stay active at school by participating. As

students have no option to skip these activities because they are part of their curriculum. This

makes the importance of co-curricular activities very high. Co-curricular activities are helpful for

students as they enhance their physical and mental health of a student and help relieve students

from academic stress.

Therefore, as students should be given more and more opportunities to explore their

interests and abilities, the importance of co-curricular activities cannot be denied. To instill the

‘all-rounder’ factor in students, co-curricular activities in school are being integrated into the

academic curriculum in schools across several countries in the world. Also, the importance of co-

curricular activities in the integrative school curriculum is appreciated.

This research aims to know the impact co-curricular activities on the students’ academic

performance. And to know how time and influence impacts academic performance of the students. And

the purpose of co-curricular activities is to fuel student learning and to build important life skills. Skills

built, such as social and leadership skills, can enrich a student's academic experience. Co-curricular

activities are meant to bring social skills, intellectual skills, moral values, personality progress and

character appeal in students.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

RRL LOCAL
“Our learners need outlets through co-curricular or extra-curricular activities to ease their

stress, tension, and anxieties brought by the health crisis. Co-curricular activities have been

proven to bring positive impact on the health and well-being of our learners,” Bureau of

Learning Delivery (BLD) Director Leila Areola (2022). The study says that engaging in co-

curricular activities provides an avenue for our learners to develop social connections, explore

their interests, and enhance their overall well-being. Such activities foster a sense of belonging,

teamwork, and personal fulfillment, serving as vital components in managing the challenges. By

actively participating in these activities, individuals can cultivate resilience, improve their mental

and emotional health, and acquire valuable life skills that contribute to their growth and

development.

Guest and Schneider (2016) noted that researchers have found a positive association

between the co-curricular activities and the academic performance of the activities with their

academic pursuits. They also understand better how to manage their time efficiently and increase

their interest in school. At the end of the study, performing co-curricular activities benefits the

student with their time management. It also promotes being better with academic performance.

Rathore, Kashif; Chaudhry, Abdul Qayyum; Azad, Muhammad (Apr 2018) Benefits of

co-curricular activities (CA) are numerous, including self-confidence, communication skills and

good physical health. So far, little importance has been given to study the relationship of co-

curricular activities and exam performance in Pakistan. Consequently, students are living in an
environment where they have little idea of how co-curricular activities affect their exam

performance or grades. They only give importance to their studies to achieve higher grades in

exams. This research study examined the role of co-curricular activities and exam performance

of students at different levels of class attendance. Multiple regression analysis demonstrated that

co-curricular activities have a positive impact on student's exam performance. The Sobel test of

mediation showed that attendance partially mediated the association of involvement in co-

curricular or non-classroom activities with exam performance. Participation in co-curricular

activities improves class attendance of students which then plays an important role in achieving

high grades in exams. The “Independent sample t-test" showed that students who were involved

in co-curricular or non-classroom activities had better grades or exam performance than those

students who were not part of these activities.

The participation of the learners in the co-curricular activities contributes to attaining

their learning competencies. The school profile is not related to the extent of contribution of most

of the co-curricular activities to pupils’ learning competencies. Among the top problems

encountered by the learners in participating Co-Curricular activities dwell on the pupils’ struggle

with time management, short attention span, costly activities, the difficulty of coping up and

tardiness (De Vera, M. R. G. T., & Queroda, P. G., 2020). This study was made to determine the

effects of extra and co-curricular activities on the academic performance of intermediate pupils

with big campuses with standard number of pupils and sample teaching force. Most of the

schools hold 5-7 co-curricular activities. More so, most of the learners participate in the co-

curricular activities in school, district, division, and regional levels.

According to Leverage Edu (2021), To put it simply, co-curricular activities are activities

that are supplementary to classroom education. They are not directly linked to the course
curriculum, but they form an important part of it by allowing students to engage in learning

experiences. Usually, co-curricular activities do not carry grades but the student’s performance in

these activities is shown in the report card. The study says that co-curricular activities do not

have anything to do with academic performance and it would be up to the students on how they

would perform. It also says that doing co-curricular activities would greatly benefit the student’s

management with their own time and with their own performance.

In recent years, academic performance and sports affiliations of students have gained

popularity over correlational studies. Notions like student-athletes earning "a sound mind and a

sound body" through sports participation claimed by sports enthusiasts have been rivaled by

some people believing that sports participation hindered student’s ability to perform well in

academics because of their training and practice commitments rather than studying by

themselves (Montecalbo-Ignacio, Ignacio, & Buot, 2017). The study shows that students insert

more effort into doing academic performance while doing co-curricular activity at the same time.

The management of the students has a big impact because this helps them grow on their selves.

Co-curricular activities were classified as those in which students can apply competencies

learned in the classroom teaching-learning setting such as monthly culmination activities of the

Nutrition month held in July, Science and Math Month in September, and open symposiums held

by the school where resource speakers are invited (Quimbo, 2023). The study said that students

use the things they learn doing academic performance doing co-curricular activities. It also

demonstrates how academic performance enhances co-curricular activities pursuits.

“Activities that are recognized by a school or university, that fall beyond the ___domain of

academic curriculum but is an essential part of a student’s life at an educational institute. Co-

curricular activities include sports, school bands, student newspaper etc. They may also be
classified as ‘Extracurricular’ i.e., activities that are carried out beyond the regular course of

study or operate as extra class activities” (Leverage Edu, 2021). At the end of the study, it says

that activities focus on the social as well as cultural development of an individual. We come

across several social and cultural situations where we are expected to act in a certain way. These

activities are important for improving the social skills of an individual.

Co-curricular activities are not just about having a good time. They can also teach you

valuable skills that you can use in your academic and professional life. For instance, playing a

team sport can help you develop leadership skills and learn how to work in a group. Participating

in a debate can improve your critical thinking and public speaking skills and volunteering for a

community service project can help you develop empathy and compassion for others

(Ezyschooling, 2023). The study shows that co-curricular do have a lot of benefits for every

student. Participating in co-curricular activities would enlighten students’ skills on academic

performance.

Co-curricular involvement plays important roles in students’ cognitive and affective

development, educational effectiveness, and satisfaction, as well as a sense of belonging.

Moreover, these practices can help equip a diverse population with the academic and

professional skills that are necessary to succeed in the technological workforce (Paulino, 2022).

In the study, interest was to assess the co-curricular activities engagement of students and their

effect on academic achievement and behavior. In the study, interest was to assess the co-

curricular and extra-curricular activities engagement of students and their effect on academic

achievement and behavior.

A co-curricular activity is defined as a program or out-of-class activity that is supervised

and/or financed by the school. This provides curriculum-related learning and character-building
experiences. Co-curricular activities enhance social interaction, leadership, healthy recreation,

self-discipline, and self-confidence among school students. This paper explores the impact of co-

curricular activities in academic achievement of students and its associated linkages to

personality development of children in the secondary schools of General Emilio Aguinaldo

National HighSchool (Toledo, 2019).

RRL FOREIGN
Academic achievement represents performance outcomes that indicate the extent to

which a person has accomplished specific goals that were the focus of activities in instructional

environments, specifically in school, college, and university. School systems mostly define

cognitive goals that either apply across multiple subject areas (e.g., critical thinking) or include

the acquisition of knowledge and understanding in a specific intellectual ___domain (e.g., numeracy,

literacy, science, history). Therefore, academic achievement should be a multifaceted construct

that comprises different domains of learning. Because the field of academic achievement is very

wide-ranging and covers a broad variety of educational outcomes, the definition of academic

achievement depends on the indicators used to measure it (Steinmayr, 2022).

According to Ananya Singh (2017), IRA International Journal of Education and

Multidisciplinary Studies 6 (3), 241-254, 2017 Development of child’s body and mind demand

proper nurturing of its physical and intellectual qualities as few of the major determinants of his

personality. Therefore, modern approaches of education emphasize all round development of the

child. The process of education is not something static or one time measure rather, continuous,

and lifelong endeavor that can be divided in two parts: curricular activities and co-curricular

activities. Co-curricular activities, as the name implies, are those, not directly related with the
prescribed curriculum and include sports, athletics, scouting, cubing, various hobbies, excursions

literary societies, dramatics, debates etc. to bring social and physical adjustments in the child.

The present study reveals the fact that involvement in co-curricular activities produces its

effect on academic performance of the students. Most of the studies have been carried out and

they have revealed the fact that co-curricular activities certainly affect the academic

achievements of the students. The purpose of this research is to establish that co-curricular

activities in which university students participate have a positive effect on their academic

achievements. The study was conducted by using the questionnaire filling technique which was

distributed among 500 students at the university. The study gave the fact that according to the

students involved in any kind of sports, participating in dramatic and other literary activities

positively affects their academic performance, while watching the television has also some

positive impact on academic performance. So, it can be deduced from the study that co-curricular

activities affect academic achievements of the students, and this impact also depends upon those

activities in which the students are keenly involved (M. Daniyal, T. Nawaz, A. Hassan, I.

Mubeen, 2023). Academic performance is a student's standing in the class, whether it is

excellent, average, or a grade that needs to improve. Academic performance plays a role in the

lives of students since it allows us to utilize our credentials to apply for opportunities such as

scholarships. It will be simple for us, especially students, to determine which strand or college

course is best for us.

In the 21st century, the pure academic type of education students is introduced to is

gradually giving way to the type of education that seeks to incorporate the three taxonomies of

education: cognitive, psychomotor, and affective. Co-curricular activities have been linked to

intellectual, emotional, social, and moral development of the child. It is based on this that this
study sought to establish a functional relationship between students’ involvement in co-curricular

activities and their performance in economics (Acquah, Bernard Y. S.; Partey, Peter Anti, 2014).

Academic performance is usually viewed in terms of numerical figures as manifested in

the individual activities of students in the classroom. As mentioned by Husaini, Y & Shukor, N

(2022), students' Academic Performance is vital for assessing a student's standing within a

university. It makes it possible for academic staff, educational administrators, and decision-

makers to precisely evaluate students taking various courses throughout a semester. Additionally,

it served as a cautionary tale for the students to assess their performance level and make

subsequent improvements Supported by the results from the study of Husaini, Y & Shukor, N

(2023), students' academic performance is vital for assessing a student's standing within a

university. It makes it possible for academic staff, educational administrators, and decision-

makers to precisely evaluate students taking various courses throughout a semester. The study

investigated the relationship between student’s academic performance and their participation in

Co-curricular activities (Gutierrez, 2023).

Co-curricular activities refer to the events and learning skills that take place alongside the

academic curriculum which offers opportunities for the students to develop specific skills and

exhibit their non -academic abilities which are essential for interacting individually or

collectively in their work and social life. These activities are considered as gained skills that

accomplished out-of-class to complement and extend the formal learning skills of a course or

academic program. This work has been conducted along with information technology track,

computer science department, Community College, Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University,

Dammam, Saudi Arabia. In this paper, a new methodology was suggested to improve the
students’ performance based on modern generic skills by integrating co-curricular activities with

curriculum to enhance the achievement of the necessary work requirements. The results

showed that co-curricular activities had great effects on students ‘performance based on these

skills (Alrawjih, 2019).

Co-curricular activities are described as activities that enable the curricular or key

curriculum to be strengthened and improved. They are the essential foundation for the identity of

the pupil and promote the learning of the classroom. However, a significant proportion of pupils

in Bangladesh do not participate in such activities. One of the primary reasons is because many

believe these activities would jeopardize a student's academic performance. This study's

objective is to ascertain the actual effect of co-curricular activities on pupils (Elsevier B.V.,

2021).

The study was designed to estimate the function of sports and co-curricular activities

(CCA) on academic achievement among secondary schools’ students in newly merged districts

in Khyber m Pakhtunkhwa Province ex Federally Administrative Tribal Areas (FATA). A

sample size of 200 subjects was chosen from 10 high schools in the Frontier Region Kohat (FR

Kohat, 2021).

Co-curricular activities promote enthusiasm, vitality, positive thinking, and team spirit

which in turn, contribute to personality development. Co-curricular activities facilitate the

development of various domains of mind and facilitate the development of various domains of

mind and personality such as intellectual development, emotional development, social

development, moral development, and aesthetic development (Khan and Iqbal, 2014).
A co-curricular movement is characterized as a program or out-of-class action, managed,

and financed by the school, which gives educational plan related learning and character-building

encounters. Co-curricular exercises are willful or not a piece of the standard school educational

plan, are not managed and do not acquire credits. It incorporates the games, discusses, tests,

shows, craftsmanship exercises, student clubs, affiliations, and associations that direct those

exercises. It is also known as co-curricular exercises that instructive association in some piece of

the world makes for learners (Batool and Ahmad, 2020).
