MYP Personal Project - Concept Kit Design

A: Planning

My Learning Goal
When I started thinking about possible ideas for my MYP Personal Project, I felt like I had an advantage
compared to my peers as I already knew what I wanted to do. I have loved the sport of football since my early
childhood. I remember watching my first-ever football match in December of 2017 between two rival teams,
Barcelona and Real Madrid. I was 9 at the time, watching the match with my paternal cousins who all supported
Real Madrid, except for one. I remember him being the only Barcelona supporter in the family. I also remember
the happiness on his face as Barcelona scored 3 goals past the Real Madrid goalkeeper. The scenes of his pure
happiness were the start of my admiration for the sport. I grew up to support an English club, Manchester City. I
always found happiness in watching my team score and win titles. Unfortunately, I am not close with any of my
paternal cousins anymore, but watching El Classico every year brings back the memories and fills me with this
nostalgic feeling. In recent months, I started developing a new interest as well. I started focusing on the uniform
the players have to wear every match. I finally saw how sacred this was to a club and how important it is in
reflecting the club’s history. I got my first football jersey in 2018; it was a Paris Saint-Germain home jersey with
the name “Neymar” and the number 10 on the back. I remember wearing this jersey every time I went out with
my family or friends to the extent that my parents started getting mad because I never wore anything else. My
second jersey was a Juventus one. It was the 2019-2020 kit. This was a gift from my
maternal aunt. I remember wearing this shirt when playing football in the street
during the holy month of Ramadan. It was really common for us Egyptian kids to
play football at night after praying. We used to flex our football jersey collections
and I used to love that as I got to see new kits. I only got very invested in the process
of designing kits earlier this year. I started watching Instagram reels posted by
Jersey Bird, a recently founded sportswear brand, and followed many concept kit
designers including the likes of Noah Qehzy. I also watched a couple of YouTube
videos that taught me how to design a 2D kit such as the Manchester City one
attached, however, this was far less realistic than what I really wanted to achieve.
Based on all of this, I decided that My learning goal is to learn how to design 3D
football kits. This would lead me to further expand my existing knowledge and learn
more to become a successful designer.

My product goal
My learning goal, as stated earlier, is to learn how to design 3D football kits. This should lead to me
gaining new skills and improving my existing ones. I am looking to improve some of my existing skills such as
my designing skills and increasing my familiarity with Adobe Photoshop. I have considered many product goals
that would be suitable for my previously stated learning goal but only one stood out from the rest. My product
goal is to start a concept kit design instagram account. I wasn’t a big fan of instagram a few years ago as I
thought Facebook was easier to navigate, however, one couldn’t resist the trend of joining Instagram. I chose
Instagram as the platform for sharing my designs as it is the fastest-growing social media platform with a 47.8%
increase in users since 2020 (“Fastest Growing Social Media Networks 2022-23”). I will be sharing a variety of
content revolving around concept kit designs including posts, reels, and stories. These will later be assessed
using Instagram Insights which allows me to see the increase of views and interactions my content gets.

My success criteria
When developing success criteria to evaluate my product at the end of my MYP Personal Project
journey, I looked for aspects that would show my ability to start a fast-growing instagram account. Using some

1
research skills, I was able to find and set SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and
Time-Bound) using the statistics I found online. I also used some aspects of the ACCESS FM evaluating system
such as aesthetics and funds.

I. Experts such as Hootsuite advise influencers to post 3-5 times weekly. Posting around 36 times during
the specific timeframe of around 3 months would mean that I have to post on average once every 2
days which is the perfect frequency of posting on Instagram.
II. Posting reels helps in attracting more audience since it has been proven that Instagram reels can boost
the reach of any account. It has also been stated that 20% of all Instagram activity is via Instagram
Reels (Wiley), meaning an account is more likely to go viral by uploading reels.

Justification
I. The range of 1000 to 2000 accounts was decided after having a friendly conversation with the founder
and CEO of TemplateFC, a mockup provider company with over 10k followers on one account and
over 45k on the other, who told me that such a range would mean that my account is active and
successful.
II. Studies have proven that the standard for a small account on Instagram is a 12% to 15% engagement
rate. However, a higher engagement rate would be suitable for smaller accounts and brands. Thus I
chose this range.
III. Based on what Danya Dancheva said on her blog, 100 followers is an achievement to celebrate on
Instagram. I have also conducted some research by looking at Instagram accounts with similar content
and found that many achieved 80 followers in 3 months with less commitment, thus 80 to 100

Justification
I. This process is expected to consume a fair amount of money, however, I am only able to spend $50 as
funds from my father. In case I need more funds during my process, I would have to either start a
fundraiser or use marketing skills to sell my designed products.
II. After conducting some research, I was able to find 2 possible sponsors for my journey through kit
designing, an Egyptian YouTuber known as “Beta3 ElKora” and my template supplier “TemplateFC”.
These were subject to success or failure or even increasing, but they were a good goal to set for
myself.

Justification
I. All designs posted need to be as aesthetically pleasing as possible. This is due to 2 main reasons, the

first being the fact that the audience is more likely to interact with posts that they like. The second
being that the main focus of modern football kits is aesthetics as it is the most appealing to the fans.
II. Concept kits are normally known for reflecting the country or team’s history or identity in a way that
real kits don’t normally do. This could be through wilder patterns and unusual styles.
III. All kits need to be creative and original as not having either of those would show a lack of skill.

My Timeline
I only created one timeline for my project plan as I expected a lot of uncertain change throughout the
project. The timeline is semi-detailed with brief dates which I expect to have the product done by. The timeline
also has a list of smaller tasks within the specified task. It also connects every task to the success criteria relevant
to the task. Another table is attacked after the timeline with specific details and justifications for the tasks.

Task Details

Instagram Setup I had already had a failed attempt to start this Instagram account and run it back in
(rebranding) early July of 2023. This attempt quickly failed due to the lack of organization and
commitment. The rebranding included, choosing a name, making a profile picture, a
brand logo, and a bio.

Fiverr Setup I chose to set up a Fiverr account and publish a gig where I could offer my service to
small teams and individuals looking to get a unique kit designed by me. The kit
would be sent out as a number of pictures (PNG or jpeg) depending on the chosen

4
offer. My gig included 3 offers: basic, standard, and premium. Fiverr could help me
get extra funds needed to invest in more templates and resources which would help
me design better kits.

Shirt Designing Shirt designing is the most significant aspect of my MYP personal project as it would
be a main factor in all other aspects. Throughout the specified time frame, I will be
looking to design at least 32 football kits in total. The designing process will utilize
templates bought from TemplateFC.

Instagram Posts This ties very closely to the previous task (Shirt designing). I will be posting the
shirts I design every other day which means that I will end up with 3 to 4 kits posted
a week. 3 to 4 posts a week on Instagram is considered the optimal number of posts
to maximize reach (McLachlan and Cohen). I believe this is a very achievable goal,
as it shouldn’t consume much time.

Instagram Reels Instagram reels are a newly introduced addition to Instagram that has been
significantly affecting the reach and follower count of many Instagram influencers.
Instagram reels are believed to be one of the most efficient ways to reach more
audience as it is usually shown to random people who might have never seen your
account. I believe that this would not only add variety to my content but also help me
reach more people and boost my follower count.

Reach Out for Sponsors I will be reaching out to possible sponsors that could be interested in supporting my
journey and funding my brand. The possible sponsors are TemplateFC, a sports
template provider, and an Egyptian YouTube influencer named Beta3 ElKora, whose
content is focused on football news and podcasts in Egyptian Arabic.

Data Analysis During this stage, I will gather and analyze data from Instagram Insights such as final
follower count, accounts reached, and other important statistics. I will then use these
data to evaluate the success of my account and critically reflect on the process and
result.

B: Applying Skills

ATL skills used for learning goal

ATL skill (research)

To achieve my learning goal, I applied the research ATL skill. In particular, I collected and
analyzed data to identify solutions and make informed decisions. The research ATL skill came in very
handy in choosing a suitable mockup (template) provider. This was a tough decision to make due to the
many companies and individuals who offered this service at different qualities and prices. Therefore, to
make an informed decision about my mockup provider, I needed to conduct extensive research. During
this process, I was able to learn about 2 major options in the field. The first of them was a website which
provided free PSDs (Photoshop Documents) called PS Files. However, their quality was not of my
standards, at least compared to the second option, TemplateFC. TemplateFC offered 4K mockups for
$25. This option was very expensive but rewarding enough for me as they also offered sponsorships for
designers and creators. To make sure I could make the correct choice, I created a format for comparing
my options.

After deeply considering both options, I saw that the pros of TemplateFC outweigh the cons.
This led me to decide that buying my mockups from TemplateFC would be the best option. After
deciding on my mockup provider, I started to document the most important sources that I would use to
achieve both my learning and product goals. These sources are organized in the table below.

ATL skills used for product goal

ATL skill (thinking)

My product goal as mentioned previously is to start a concept kit design instagram account. To
match my success criteria, I needed to post at least 32 designs which needed a lot of creativity and
thinking. At the start of the process of designing any kit, I would conduct quick research about the club’s
history, previous kits, colors, and nicknames. I would also look for other concept kits made for the club
as they could help me in the brainstorming process. I would then use my thinking ATL skills to find a
good balance between all the mentioned factors of the club and merge them into a visually appealing
design. This was sometimes through having a retro element in my designs or adding an element inspired
by the club’s identity. I start my process of designing a kit by choosing a suitable template and
downloading all the logos. I already had my logo so I only needed to find the club’s logo. I would
normally use Wikipedia or Wikimedia as a source for very high-quality logos. I would then look for the
club sponsor which wouldn’t normally be found as a PNG. This would cause me to insert the picture into
Photoshop and use the “select > color rage” tool which allows me to remove the background and make
my PNG of the sponsor. I would then add all the base colors to the designs. Next, I would insert the
logos I previously downloaded. Afterward, I would create a unique pattern that reflects the club’s
identity while maintaining a very modern and visually pleasing look. This section proved to be the most
difficult compared to all other aspects of the process. This is due to the extreme need for creative

7
thinking skills. Then, I would add some final touches which would include adjusting the lighting, slightly
modifying the pattern, and using slightly different shades. Lastly, I would design a background for the
design’s displayment which mostly used my graphic design skills which improved massively during the
project. The following diagram shows the process I used while designing this Fluminense Away concept
kit.

ATL skill (communication)

As my success criteria state, I would need between 80 and 100 followers
to be satisfied with my product. While this seems like a small number, it really
felt impossible at one point. During the first month of Personal Project, the
follower count was extremely low and had a very slow rate of increase. In
addition, my posts only averaged 15 to 20 likes. At first, this seemed impossible
to change, until I got accepted into the
TemplateFC creator team. The creator
of TemplateFC posted a story asking for designers who would
be interested in collaborating with him. As soon as I saw that, I
knew it was my time. After texting him asking for a
collaboration, he quickly replied by telling me about his plan to
do collaborations with the whole TemplateFC creator team very
soon. Less than a week later, I was added to a group chat called
TemplateFC Creators. The group chat had 8 designers in total
and we immediately received a message from the TemplateFC account. The message was a request to
start some collaboration projects in order to cross-promote each other. Another example of me using this
important ATL skill to learn more about design and improve my kits is a survey I sent in the TemplateFC
Creators group chat. The survey had basic questions revolving around the elements of a good concept
kit.

Survey - What makes a good football kit

Questions Top Answers or Summary

What defines a good kit? A good kit needs to be original, creative, easy on the eye, represent its club,
and follow the club’s color schemes.

What is your favorite kit in Newcastle Away 1995: “The contrast and simplicity of its colors. Stripes,

good in your opinion? footballing world. Pair those wine and navy hoops with the iconic Adidas
three stripes and you have an absolute classic.” - Absolute Limbs
Nigeria 2018: “It follows all my criteria from my first answer, and also was
the kit that helped launch me into my career and kit design. So I have a
personal connection with it. I also think it helped start the innovation of kit
designs and inspire more unique designs throughout the footballing world, but
that may be a biased association I have due to my fondness for it.” - Noah

Italy 2020 home kit: “Perfect use of the blue color (3 shades, 1 darker for the
collar, 2 for the tone on tone design), very great idea of design with the
Renaissance pattern (the Cultural pack from 2020 when Puma use cultural
elements for the design of their teams was the best way to design kit in my
opinion), this already great design is elevated by the use of gold accent and the
recolored logo that use the blue from the collar. Plus the details with small
lines that use the colors of the Italian flag on the collar and the cuff are a great
addition” - Arth7design
Barcelona 22/23 Away: “Rich connection to the city - specifically to the
Olympic games” - DB Design

When designing a kit, what 1. Start off by researching about the team, their previous kits,
are the steps you take? fan-favorite kits, symbols, logos, legends, icons, nicknames, and so
on.
2. Once I'm familiar with the team, I start to find a design that fits for the
team, using (or not sometimes) the information from step (1).”
3. Find the right mockup/template for the design.
4. Start the design, try to find a satisfying way to implement the design
into the template.

C: Reflecting

The impact of my project on my learning

When I started my MYP Personal Project, I knew to some extent that my learning would not stop after
achieving my learning goal. However, I discovered that most of my learning was actually during the process of
creating the product. As mentioned before, my product goal was to start a concept kit instagram account. Even
though I tried my best to learn as much as possible during the learning stage of my process, I discovered that
learning through problem solving and risk-taking was much more effective in the long run as I got the chance to
experiment with unusual styles. An example of this would be learning about the “Select > Color Range'' feature
in Adobe Photoshop. This feature was not something I learned at the start of the project, instead, I only learned it
when I found out about the ineffectiveness of deleting the background using the “Eraser Tool'' which led to me
researching alternatives. Another important skill I learned was creating color libraries. This enabled me to save
all the exact colors I would need to design a kit and have them saved in the same folder. Such simple skills
proved to be essential as they saved me over 10 hours of unnecessary manual erasing and color coding. Another
issue that faced me was balancing the time consuming process of designing and my typical school work. I also
learned valuable skills nonrelated to design. A prime example of this would be learning how to manage a school
fundraiser which helped me raise money to buy important tools for the project. This is a very valuable skill as it
could also help me raise money if I need to during CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) next year or any other
event that would need financial support.

9
The impact of my project on myself
The MYP personal project opened my eyes to many things and developed me as a person significantly.
This project provided me with an early experience of what to expect from a workspace later on in life. This is
through the meetings I had to attend with my employer in TemplateFC every once in a while. In addition, the
project opened my eyes to the field of design as a career. This essentially started when I got my first job offer
from a company called Clothly. The offer was for me to work as a freelance designer for their company and
potentially work with 4th and 5th tier football teams. This offer was accepted and I am currently awaiting my
first team. Another offer I got was from an Indian youth club for the less fortunate players called Inter Campton.
This offer was much less than the previous one due to the lack of financial support behind the club.
Unfortunately, the club’s budget for the design was too low for my liking to the point where I would make no
profit. While these offers were very weak compared to the average payment of a designer, I believe they are a
very good source of experience and making a name for myself in the business world. A couple of months into the
Personal Project journey, I started preparing for my exhibition. This included me attempting to print merchandise
for Anubis. This included 2 hoodies and an oversized t-shirt. This brought up the idea of turning Anubis into a
clothing brand instead of just concept kits. In fact, one of these hoodies was sold to a big fan in Spain.

Product
My product goal, starting a concept kit design instagram account, was achieved successfully before the
deadline of the 31st of January. The Instagram account, named @anubis.jersey, had a total of 175 followers as of
the stated deadline. The account had a profile picture of the Egyptian god, Anubis. I chose this name because of
how it connected to me. As mentioned previously, I am an Egyptian living in Mozambique. This caused me to
have the urge to show my identity in my project. I decided that the account name would be something related to
Egyptian methodology, and what better name than the god responsible for mummification and guarding the
pyramids? This acts as a metaphor for how I would be guarding the arts of football kit design by designing the
best kits possible. The account’s bio had my profession as a designer. It also had the Egyptian flag and the year
2023 which is the year of establishment. The bio also had the TemplateFC instagram account with my own 20%
off discount code, “ANUBIS”. I also had a link to my customized link tree using linktr.ee which included my
instagram, my Fiverr link, and the TemplateFC website with my discount code attached.

This surpassed my set goal for excellence in the success criteria stated
previously by a total of 6 kits and surpassed the satisfactory goal by 12 kits.
This criterion proved to be very successful mostly due to the time
management skills that were used to make such an achievement possible.

In addition to that, an extra post was

published to announce me as part of the
TemplateFC creator team. There were also 2
Instagram reels posted on the account. The
first of them was a 16-second edit inviting
viewers to follow my account. The second
was much richer in quality as it explained
the steps taken to design my “2023 Special
kit” which included aspects from the 13
most successful football clubs in the year
2023 as a variation of the “wrapped” trend at the end of the year. This trend
included creators posting a summary of the most influential events in their
field. The video was 1:24 minutes long and had a voiceover generated using
artificial intelligence in addition to background music from the song
“Monaco” by Bad Bunny. This reached the low end of my satisfactory
criteria and caused the lack of variety in my content. This is mostly due to
the lack of commitment towards editing reels as they consumed too much
time for the value they gave my account. This could’ve been improved by
sticking to the planned timeline which would’ve made it closer to the
excellence criteria.

➢ To calculate the engagement

states that the engagement rate formula is Engagement Rate = Total
Engagement / Total Followers x
100%. Using this formula, My
engagement rate came out to be
26.2%. This is 6.2% over the
satisfactory goal set in the
success criteria. This could be
due to many reasons including
the low follower count and the
high quality of the kits.
➢ The account gained 175 followers by the end of the time frame. This
is considered a huge success for my product as I nearly doubled my
follower count goal in such a very short time frame. The essential
goal of 100 followers was achieved on December 19, 2023. This was
an early surprise that helped me show more commitment towards the
project and the Instagram account.

turned out to be a very successful one and we were
able to raise over $250. $75 of these were used to
buy some new mockups for my own Personal
Project, while the rest was split amongst the other
contributors towards the bake sale.

After realizing how costly these templates really

were and how I was always in need of more mockups, I decided to explore
TemplateFC’s sponsorships. The company offered sponsorships for designers
all around the world who show commitment towards the field of concept kit
design. I quickly sent them an email offering myself as a potential member
of the TemplateFC creator team. Soon enough, I got an email back from the
CEO congratulating me on joining the creator team! This gave me the
opportunity to expand my account and make a name for myself in the
concept design industry.

The survey’s result proved that a key strength of my designs was originality
and creativity. This goes to support the extensive application of critical
thinking and creativity skills. In addition, the survey shows that the designs
were mostly aesthetically pleasing. Lastly, while most people who took the
survey thought that Anubis’s design’s reflected the country of the team's
history or identity, nearly 10% believe that this aspect was relatively poor.
This could be due to many reasons but mostly due to the lack of bold signs
and hints that represent the club or country’s identity.

Overall Reflection
I think I created a very successful product, however, it can be improved. I believe that I did very well for
someone starting in the field. I also believe that my improvement was very rapid when comparing some of my
first designs to some of my latest ones, but naturally, nothing is perfect and there is always room for
improvement. My main weakness during the process was finding a balance between simplicity and detail in kits.
I would happen to design some kits that would get scrapped immediately for being too simple or over-detailed. I
also feel that more learning of some Photoshop skills would be necessary for improvement such as learning more
about smart filters and other tools in Photoshop. Such skills are very difficult to master without a lot of practice
and longer time frames. I am very glad to have met all of my goals and excelled in many of them.
