WINGS TEMPLATE © 57 inches Width

28 inches Height

This template will give you the framework to make

ing
a set of wings that measures when open is 57 inches in

sW
he
inc
width, 28 inches in height with each wing measuring

.4
37
37.4 inches from base to tip.

The wings will fit both a child and an adult, as the straps are adjustable (although this design specially for a childs proportions).
Making the costume out of carbdoard is a little bit like sewing a dress, you lay the pattern down, then cut it out and join it together.
The only difference is that your material is cardboard, your scissors are blades and you’ll be attaching the sections together with buttons and glue.

Copyright Disclaimer
Thank you so much for purchasing this template. I have spent a considerable amount of time developing this costume so that you can print
the templates as many times as you like and make as many wings as you wish. But please DO NOT share or use this template for commercial
or financial gain, without the permission of the copyright owner, Zygote Brown Designs.

Step four

WINGS TEMPLATE © Using a sharp blade carefully cut the templates out, making sure to stick to the cutting lines. Mark out your pivot joints by
poking a hole throught the paper into the cardboard where X marks the spot. Score the cardboard on the scoring lines
(being careful not to go all the way through, as you are basically just cutting the outer layer of cardboard). Remove the
paper templates and then bend and mold the scored lines inwards. This enables you to shape the cardboard so it will be
Step one
able to curve into the shoulder.
Download and print out the templates on TABLOID SIZE PAPER 11 x 17 inches .

Step two
Line up and join the Back Braces and Left/Right wings D & E,
using the crosses to align your templates. Then join the sheets together
with some tape. (You can use a window as a lightbox).

Step five
Take Back Brace A and B and pierce the pivot joint holes all the way through using a pen or pencil (your hole really only needs to
be a couple of millimeters wide, just enough to fit the base pin of the jeans button through). Glue the two back braces
together curving the the two shoulder strips inwards as they dry, this will create a curve to hug the shoulder.
Aligning Cross

Step three
Cut and trim around all the templates and lay them out onto some cardboard.
Make sure the fluting arrows (the inner cardboard channels) are facing in
the right direction. (Use a bit of blu-tac (sticky tac) to secure them).

Step six
To create the pivoting points in the wings we are using jean buttons. To attach, place the jean button underneath the
2 peices of cardboard inserting the shank up into the ready made hole. Place the tack over the hole and into the shank of the
button. Make sure to put something down over your work surface so as to protect it from being damaged. Using a hammer,
hammer the tack into the jean button shank.

All the wings pieces are added onto the back of each other in the
following order. THIS ORDER IS VERY IMPORTANT,
A. IF THE ORDER IS WRONG THE WINGS WILL NOT WORK!
WingTemplate
The reason each wing is added behind the last wing is because this
enables you to hammer the joints together properly.

IT IS ESSENTIAL THT THE PIVOT POINTS ARE PRECISE,

OTHERWISE THE WINGS WILL NOT FULLY EXTEND OR RETRACT

Step seven
B. Attach all wings in the order of A, B,C, D, and then E as shown
WingTemplate in the diagram. The wings attached using the pivot points
highlighted and pointed out with the arrows on the diagram.

It can get awkward so make sure you have alot of space.

C. Step eight
WingTemplate Attach your two 100cm straps/ webbing to the shoulder band using
hot glue. Then line up and attach the inner Back Brace C over the top.
This will hide the strap attachments and pivot joints and reinforce the brace.

Step nine
Take both straps and push/thread them through the lower slots.
This will mean create arm loops and the remainder straps around the

D. waste/chest area.

WingTemplate
Step ten
Take your Wing Stopper and create a V shape with the stip of cardboard.
This V is going to be your Wing Stopper, it is going to stop your wings
overlapping and hyperextending past their articlulating point. Put the
wings into a closed wing position and add hot glue to one of the sides
of the V stopper and place and glue the V into where the two lower
wings meet. See diagram.
