What is Poetry

• Poetry is an artistic expression of thought an


d emotion in rhythmical language.

• A kind of verbal music.

• The poet uses words for sound effects as the


musician uses Musical notes.
Qualities of poetry

1. Poetry has musical and rhythmic qualities that ch


ildren enjoy.
2. Poetry appeals to the imagination.
3. The emotional content of poetry must be sincere
, worth expressing, and must be universal in app

4. Subjects of poetry for Children must be varied.

Classification of poetry

1. Types pf poems According to form:


A. Narrative poems tell a story and relate events.

Kinds of narrative poems:


2. BALLADS- are narrative poems that are intended to be sung.
3. EPICS- deal with deeds and heroic adventures.
4. METRICAL ROMANCES- are lengthy narrative poems that de
al of love and brave deeds of a hero like "Canter~bury Tales".
B. Lyric poems express the feeling, the mood, an
d the personality of the poet.

Kinds of lyric poems:


1. Songs- are poems that can be sung.
"A song to Celia" by: Ben Johnson
"Trees" by: Joyce Kilmer

2. Pastoral poems- are about shepherds and rural scenes.

3. Sonnets- are poems of 14 lines. There is a definite rhymi
ng pattern.

4. Elegy- is a meditative poem that expresses grief or deals


with sorrow and death.

5. Ode- is a form of lyric poetry expressing emotion and i
t's usually addressed to someone or something, or it repre
sents the poet's musings on that person or thing.

Factors that Influence Appreciation
of poetry

1. The Teacher
• Natural Love in Poetry.
• Broad educational background and reading excellence.
• Background of fundamental general information.
• Familiarity with miscellaneous allusion.
2. The Pupil
• The Teacher must know the pupils well, their levels of inte
rests, their varied background and responses.
• The Teacher must be quick to exploit every possibility of e
nhancing application of poetry.
There are different activities that c
hildren can involve themselves in

1. Read poetry aloud for sheer personal enjoyment.


2. Memorize favorite lines or stanzas of poems to store in t
heir memory treasure chest from wich to draw in their l
ater years.
3. Set up scrap books on which they paste clippings of favo
rite poems from magazines, postcards, calendars and an
thologies.
4. Participate in delamination contest, spech choirs, or cho
ral speaking.
5. Join poetry reading coubs.
6. Attend dramatic presentation
7. Interpret the meaning and rhythms of poem in a
pantomine or interpretative dance.
8. Make their own simple melodies and poems
9. Make a story.
10. Interpret poetry throuh drawing or illustration.
Values of poetry
1. Enriches children's experiences.
2. Develops correct enunciation and pronunciation of words.
3. Develops literary appreciation.
4. Develop the imagination.
5. Enlargest the vocabulary.
6. Improve the aesthetic sense.
7. Gives them pleasure and delight.
8. Improve their outlook in life and nature.
Suggestions in teaching Poetry Appreciatio
n

 Do not assign a poem for home preparation.


Do not belabor the pupils with the study of facts.
An excellent technique is for the Teacher to read t
he poem first.
Anticipate difficulties with some words.
Make it a natural and habitual practice to read po
etry to children.
While reading or reciting a poem to children, th
e Teacher can stand or sit and have the children s
it comfortably and relaxed too.
Do not force children to memorize poems.
Allow children time to react to poetry.
Uses of poetry
1. Use poetry to correlate with other subjects like; History,
Arithmetic (Counting Rhymes)
2. To commemorate certain events e.g. Historical events,
holidays (Christmas, New year's day, etc.)
3. To express the meaning and rhythm of a poem in a pant
omine or interpretation dance.
4. To express their thoughts and feelings and imaginations
in creative activities like drawing, clay modeling, sculptu
re.
5. Writing poems by children.
