FAIR USE GUIDELINES
• Fair use refers to the copying of a copyrighted material, with the purpose of
using it for a review, commentary, critic, or parody, without the need to ask
permission from the copyright owner.
• Parody refers to a work which ridicules another in a funny, inoffensive, and
non-derogatory manner.
• An example of this is taking a screenshot photo from a famous movie turning
into a meme. Doing so will be considered fair use if the copyrighted work was
used far from the original way it was initially used.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY ISSUES
• Intellectual property pertains to the output of a person’s intellectual pursuit,
such as his literary and artistic works, inventions, logos, symbols, and signs, as
well as names and images used for commercial purpose or advertisements.
• A copyrighted material is protected by law and cannot just be used and
reproduced without permission. Otherwise, violation of such can merit legal
sanctions.
• A patent pertains to an exclusive right granted to an invention.
• A trademark refers to a specific sign associated with a particular brand of
goods or services.

• It happens when an individual uses printed materials without proper
citation, it would send readers a wrong notion that this is an original
work, in other words, plagiarism becomes a form of fraud.
• It is a form of stealing because the person involved did not
acknowledge the original owner of the work and claimed the
material as his own.

• To avoid this, proper citation using endnotes or footnotes,
and listing the materials used in the bibliography should be
observed.
• Additionally, a researcher or writer should learn how to

• It denotes the proper attitude that one should observe when
communicating online. Whether one is talking to someone
through a video conference, instant messaging, e-mail, or
chat, netizens or Internet users should remain polite at all

• A spam mail is a form of commercial advertising which
companies send in bulk through e-mail to prospective customers.
• A chain mail refers to an e-mail which requires the receiver to
send the message to another person.

5. Ask permission first before sharing someone’s personal post,
photo, and video on social media, as this could violate the
person’s right to privacy.

Philippines Data Privacy Act (RA 10173) ISSUES
• The Philippines Data Privacy Act (RA 10173) contains some important definitions. You
have the data subject, the data processing system, data sharing, personal information
controller and processor, among others.
• Personal data which includes personal information, where the identity of the individual is
apparent, as well as sensitive personal information, which includes, among others,
information issued by government agencies such as tax identification numbers, social
security numbers, and other related information. The Philippines Data Privacy Act (RA
10173) likewise describes the general data privacy principles of transparency, legitimate
purpose, and proportionality.

social inequalities experienced by those who cannot afford to
have computer and internet access. It can also pertain to the gap
on the kind of information which can be accessed, and the
available form of communication that is allowed to be
distributed.

• In the Philippines, we do not experience restriction when it comes to acquiring
information and choosing the mode of communication we want.
• Although the Department of Education (DepEd) is making efforts to provide a
stronger Information and Communication Technology (ICT) curriculum and to
improve its facilities disabled students still have limited resources for their use.
• As we live in the 21st century, having information and technology skills is
necessary. Therefore, digital divide could hinder a person to become
information, media, and technology literate.

VIRTUAL SELF pertains to one’s representation in the virtual world,
which exists online and is only available once a person is connected to
the Internet.
• If you have a Yahoo! E-mail account, or visit virtual chat rooms and
massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG)
websites, you can customize your own profile using an avatar icon. If
you do not want to use your own picture, you can choose from a set
of avatar icons.

• In its original context, an avatar is associated with
Hinduism, specifically the God Vishnu, who can
assume both human and animal forms. In English, an
avatar can pertain to something which is associated
with nonvisual ideas.

• Emojis originated from Japan. They are part of a feature
when sending and electronic message.
• Moji in Nihonggo (Japanese language) means “character.”
• Emojis or emoticons are smileys which represented an
emotion or idea. Some people express their message through

1. Internet and Computer Addiction
• Addiction refers to a condition in which a person seems to have lost
control over an action or behavior, which mental health practitioners
deemed as self-destructive.
2. Vulnerability to Online Crimes
• With the advent of technology, bullying can now also be done through the
internet. This known as cyberbullying. In this act, harm is done when the
bully tells something derogatory about someone and the post and shares it
using social media.
