GLOBALIZATION

OF RELIGION
GLOBALIZATION OF RELIGION

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to
1. Explain how globalization affects religious practices and
beliefs, and
2. Analyze the relationship between religion and global
conflict and global peace
Globalization
The process by which business or other organization
develop international influence or start operating on an
international scale
It is the network and expansion of once-local products
into universal products, beliefs, and practices, often
through technology.

Religion
Collection of cultural and belief systems, and worldviews
that relate humanity to spirituality and sometimes, to
moral values. Generally, religion is a “System of beliefs
and practices.”
THE GLOBALIZATION OF RELIGION

• Religion and globalization have always shared a

struggle and conflict with new possibilities and
challenges
• Globalization helps increase religious tolerance and
acceptance of other cultures and religions,
enhancing our minds, knowledge, etc.
Important distinction of Religion &
Globalism
• Religion is concerned with the sacred, while globalism places value on
material wealth.
• Religion follows divine commandments while Globalism abides by
human-made laws
• Religion assumes that there is the possibility of communication between
humans and the transcendent, while globalism’s yardstick, however, is
how much of human action can lead to the highest material satisfaction
and subsequent wisdom that this new status produces.
Important distinction of Religion &
Globalism
• Religious people are less concerned with wealth and all that comes
along with it (higher social status, standard of living similar with that of
the rest of the community, exposure to culture, top of the line
education for the children) They are ascetics, in contrast with globalist,
precisely because they shun anything material for complete simplicity
• A religious person’s main duty is to live a virtuous, sin-less life such that
when he/she dies, he/she is assured of a place in the other world (i.e.
heaven), while globalists are less worried about whether they will end
up in heaven or hell and more concerned as to whether his/her work is
contributing to the general progress of the community, the nation, and
the global economic system.
Important distinction of Religion &
Globalism
• The religious detests politics and the quest for power for they are
evidence of humanity’s weakness; the globalist values them as both
means and ends to open up further the economies of the world.
• The religious is concerned with spreading holy ideas globally, while the
globalist wishes to spread goods and services.
What is the Role of
Globalization to Religion ?
The Role of Globalization to Religion

According to the book of Aldama 2018, globalization has

played an enormous role in providing a context for the
revival and the recovery of religion.
Religions have spread and scattered all over the world and
through globalization, religion continued to grow from
places to places.
Religion has entered the information age and has
globalized at accelerating rates through technological
advancement
Here are some known tools in uniting people
all over the World on a religious basis

• Special Internet Sites

• Social Network
• Cellphone Apps
• Charity Funds
• Movies
• Religious Schools
• Books and other Printed Materials
Relationship between Religion and Global
Conflict

One of the reasons why there is a

Global conflict because some people
are not respecting one’s beliefs and
practices.
Relationship between Religion and Global
Conflict
1. Most conflicts of religion globally are about identity,
economics, privilege, and power.
2. Globalization brings negative conflict to religion by
breaking traditional beliefs as people are more
connected with the world, sometimes weakening
their religious beliefs.
3. From independence, and abolition from nativism to
women’s suffrage, from prohibition to the civil rights
movement, religion had always been at the center of
these conflicts, but also on both sides of the political
barricades.
Relationship between Religion and Global
Peace

Religion however can play an important

role in peacemaking and conflict prevention
and resolution true peace is based on the
principles of human dignity and universal
humanity which are drawn from the idea
that everyone was made in the image of
God
Relationship between Religion and Global
Peace
1. Globalization brings global political forums that try to
diminish cultural, ethnic, ideological, and religious
differences.
2. Religion are the most reliable and trustworthy groups in
times of crisis and can help resolve conflicts through
negotiations.
3. Globalization brings economic marginalization, and various
religious organization such as Catholic Relief Services, World
Vision International, Islamic Relief Worldwide.
4. Religious groups can use modern technology to recruit new
members, spread the word, and keep in contact with other
religious members. For many people, religion can be a
power for peace.
Relationship between Religion and
Globalism
1. Religion was the result of a shift in the state
policy.
2. Turn of religion into the public life
3. Globalization helps to increase greater religious
tolerance and acceptance of other culture and
religion that enhances our mind, knowledge etc.
4. Media and technology play an important role to
spread the ideas of every religion.
5. Poliferation of International terrorism
Relationship between Religion and
Globalism
6. Globalization also brings negative impacts on
religion by breaking traditional beliefs as people
are more connected with the world that
sometimes weaken their own religious belief.
7. Globalization of religion brought two opposing
results: Conflict and Peace
Globalization, Religion, Global Conflict and
Global Peace
One example is “The emerging global ethic” which
states the following:
1. Corporations are prohibited from being involved in
bribery and corruptions
2. Corporations are prohibited from discriminating on
the grounds of race, religion, ethnicity, or gender
in the conduct of business; and
3. Corporations are prohibited from activities that
pose a significant threat to human life and health.
The preamble to UNESCO’s constitution says;

“Since wars begin in the minds of men, it is

in the minds of men that the defenses of
peace must be constructed.”
The world cannot have peace until nations
and people begin to reduce their selfish
desires for more and more material
possessions, give up their racial arrogance,
and eliminate-their madness for worldly
power.
The teachings of great religions on moral
principles and values are necessary tools
for the lessening of avarice, abhorrence,
and illusions that are the root causes of
conflicts.

Conclusion
Globalization has a significant impact on religion. Religious
globalization will continue on people and cultures move
across and ideas are mobilized and transported by media
technology. It has become so closely intertwined with
other institutions such as political and economic systems
that religious beliefs sometimes become the bases of
political legitimacy.
Conclusion
Religion has been both a promoter of peace and a bringer
of war. But the reason is as always human ignorance. Most
religions do not condone violence of any kind, its always
people doing wrong to themselves that they fight for God.
There won’t be any conflicts and it will only work if
everybody truly adheres to it .
