ADVERB

TYPES AND USAGE


Definition

 An adverb is a word that describes or gives more


information about a verb, an adjective, another
adverb, or even the entire sentence.
 The word "adverb" comes from the
 Latin ad- (in addition) + verbum (word).
Adverbs Usually Answer These
Questions
 Where? Home. ("I went home.")

 When? Yesterday. ("We met yesterday.")

 How? Slowly. ("The turtle moves slowly.")

 How often? Sometimes. ("Sometimes it stops responding.")

 How long? Temporarily. ("She is staying with us temporarily.")

 How likely? Surely. ("Our team will surely win!")

 To what degree? Very. ("She was very pleased.")


Adverbs Usually Describe:
 An adverb can describe a verb:

She runs quickly.

 An adverb can describe an adjective:

She is so beautiful.

 An adverb can describe another adverb:

She smokes very rarely.

 An adverb can describe an entire sentence:

Obviously, you don't have to come.


Form
 In many cases (but not always!) adverbs have the following
form:
Adjective + "-ly" Adverb
Examples:
 Quick + ly = quickly
 Strange + ly = strangely
 Dead + ly = deadly
 Sudden + ly = suddenly
 Clever + ly = cleverly
 Brave + ly = bravely
 Real + ly = really

 Frequency

 Purpose/ Reason

 Affirmation/Negation
Adverbs of Manner
 Adverbs of Manner tell us the manner or way in
which something happens. They answer the
question "how?". Adverbs of Manner mainly
modify verbs.
 He speaks slowly. (How does he speak?)
 They helped us cheerfully. (How did they help us?)
 James Bond drives his cars fast. (How does James
Bond drive his cars?)
Adverb of Place
 Adverbs of place/direction that indicate place/direction of the action in
the sentence. They answer the question ‘ where is the action performed?’.

 Across, over, under, in, out, through, backward, there, around, here,
sideways, upstairs, in the park, in the field, in that place, etc. are some
common adverbs of place/direction.

 Example:

 I went through the jungle.

 He plays in the field.

 Alex is going to school.

 He is staying at my home.
Adverbs of Time

 Adverbsof Time tell us something about the


time that something happens. Adverbs of
Time mainly modify verbs.
 They can answer the question "when?":
 He came yesterday. (When did he come?)
I want it now. (When do I want it?)
Adverbs of Frequency

 Adverbs of Frequency are adverbs of time


that answer the question "How frequently?"
or "How often?". They tell us how often
something happens. Here are some
examples:
 daily, weekly, yearly
 often, sometimes, rarely
Look at these examples:
 Most companies pay taxes yearly.
 The manager checks the toilets every hour.
 The directors meet weekly to review progress.
 We usually go shopping on Saturday.
 I have often done that.
 She is always late.
 Sometimes they come and stay with us.
 I play tennis occasionally.
 Rarely and seldom can also go at the end of a
sentence (often with "very"):
 We see them rarely.

1. He went to the market in the morning.

2. The dog sat lazily in the shade of the tree.

3. The man grumbled loudly while cleaning the table.

4. I often visit my grandparents.

5. Please wait patiently.

6. The technician fixed the problem easily.

7. They serve hot pan cakes there.

8. I am waiting here for my daughter.

9. He laughed merrily.

10. We will leave today.

11. She is standing outside.


Adverb Of Reason/Purpose
 Adverbs of Reason are also sometimes referred to as Adverbs of
Purpose. Adverbs of Reason are words used to tell the reason behind the
happening of a particular occurrence. Some examples of the Adverbs of
reason are - therefore, hence, because, so, etc.

 Because he was not feeling well, he didn’t go to school today.

 It was raining heavily; therefore, we stayed in the house.

 He was late hence was not allowed to attend the assembly.

 I was hungry so I ate pizza.

 Since it is hot, I am getting uncomfortable.

 Accidentally he wrote his father’s name instead of his.


Adverb Of Degree

 Adverbs of Degree tell us the degree or extent to which


something happens. They answer the question "how much?"
or "to what degree?". Adverbs of Degree can
modify verbs, adjectives and other adverbs.

 She entirely agrees with him. (How much does she


agree with him?)

 Mary is very beautiful. (To what degree is Mary beautiful?


How beautiful is Mary?)

 He drove quite dangerously. (To what degree did he drive


dangerously? How dangerously did he drive?)
Adverb of Affirmation

An adverb of affirmation is an adverb that is used in a sentence


to affirm it as true.
An adverb of affirmation is also used to answer a Yes-
No question raised by others.
Examples: really, certainly, absolutely, positively, definitely, truly,
undoubtedly, yes
1.She positively identified her attacker.
2.You are really a genius!
3.Yes, they are coming.
4.It was truly an awesome experience.
Adverb Of Negation
Adverbs of negation are words which declare that a given statement is false, or
negative.

Examples:
• I have never seen him.
• He is not very active.
• • I never talk to him this way.
• Dimple scarcely does her house duties.
• He no longer takes interest in his work.
• The brothers hardly ever meet each other.
• Simran rarely visits her mom on weekends.
• He contradictorily did the correct thing.
