Share market live today: Justin Khoo on Nifty 50 and Sensex plunge amid global tariff concerns

The Nifty 50 and Sensex crashed today to 10-month lows, succumbing to global pressure. Here is the view from Justin Khoo, Senior Market Analyst - APAC, VT Markets

The financial markets are currently experiencing significant turmoil, primarily due to escalating fears of tariff retaliations against the United States, which have raised concerns about a potential global economic downturn. This marks the third bear market since 2020—a rare occurrence, yet not surprising in the trading world. Notably, all three bear markets have been triggered by government interventions rather than inherent economic weaknesses.

The first instance was the COVID-19 crash in 2020, where the global economy came to a standstill due to widespread shutdowns. The second bear market in 2022 resulted from the Federal Reserve’s quantitative tightening measures aimed at controlling inflation. Now, in 2025, the introduction of sweeping tariffs by the U.S. government has led to the current market downturn.

The previous two bear markets witnessed V-shaped recoveries, suggesting that, if history serves as a guide, the current market could follow a similar trajectory. President Trump has employed tariffs as negotiation tools to secure more favorable trade deals for the U.S. Therefore, successful negotiations could potentially lead to market recovery. Additionally, there have been indications of possible interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve in response to market shocks. Lower rates, coupled with potential quantitative easing, could provide further impetus for the stock market to rebound.

Predicting market bottoms is inherently challenging; historical data can only serve as a reference. On average, non-recessionary bear markets result in declines of approximately 27%. As of now, the S&P 500 has declined by 21.9%, indicating that an additional drop of about 5% would categorize this as a recessionary bear market. Traders should monitor sharp price increases, as they may signal strong buying interest. A 20% recovery from the market low is typically considered an indication of a bear market recovery. This period may also present opportunities to invest in fundamentally strong companies, as the current downturn is driven by tariff-related shocks rather than underlying business deterioration.

Stock market live today: Vipul Bhowar: Analysing Nifty’s structure and global economic challenges

Vipul Bhowar, Senior Director - Listed Investments, Waterfield Advisors

“Examining the Nifty’s structure shows that the Financials, Technology, and Energy sectors carry significant weight. Although the immediate effect of U.S. tariffs on India’s exports is limited, the secondary consequences include lower tech investments, higher operational expenses, and disruptions to energy supply chains. Additionally, a potential recession in the U.S. might indirectly influence financial institutions by decreasing economic activity.

Currently, the Indian market faces challenges stemming from global uncertainties, which may impact our expected GDP growth. The focus will be on the responses of our government, corporate strategies, and monetary policies to these developments.”

Stock market live updates today: India faces economic setback as US announces 27% tariff on exports: Jitendra Srivastava, CEO, Triton Logistics & Maritime Pvt. Ltd

The announcement of a reciprocal tariff of 27% by the US on India will make Indian exports less competitive in the market. It will be a significant setback for our top sectors, with the automotive and pharmaceutical sectors being the most affected. The market will become more diversified. The increase in tariffs may slow down Indian exports, especially if US firms localize their supply chains. In addition, increased trade barriers have the potential to disrupt supply chains, drive input costs higher, and affect profitability, while investor sentiment in the auto industry turns defensive, leading to market volatility.

The imposition of reciprocal tariffs may slow down the logistics sector by higher shipping costs and reducing profit margins. As a result, Indian logistics companies may need to take different routes while navigating the complexities of global trade relations.

Stock market live updates today: Manav Modi, Senior Analyst, Commodity Research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd.

Gold and Silver prices continued to face turmoil, and hit their lowest levels in more than three weeks, as a wider market sell-off triggered by U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff measures impacted bullion traders. Gold and Silver dropped more than 3% on Friday as investors sold off bullion to cover their losses from a wider market meltdown as an intensifying trade war sparked concerns of a global growth slowdown. After a blanket tariff announcement by US President Trump all markets languished, however, more than 50 nations have reached out to the White House to begin trade talks since Trump rolled out sweeping new tariffs, top officials said over the weekend as they defended levies that wiped out nearly $6 trillion in value from U.S. stocks last week. China struck back at the U.S tariffs imposed by Trump with a slew of counter-measures including extra levies of 34% on all U.S. goods and export curbs on some rare-earths, deepening the trade war between the world’s two biggest economies. The European Union agrees on a first set of countermeasures targeting $28 million worth of US imports. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said tariffs increased the risk of higher inflation and slower growth, highlighting the difficult path ahead for policymakers at the U.S. central bank. Focus this week will be on RBI interest rate decision and US CPI and PPI data.

Stock market live updates today: Market view by Manish Jain , Chief Strategy Officer & Director at Mirae Asset Capital Markets

Uncertainty is the key word here. Don’t assume that you know…if we don’t know we don’t know ... .so we don’t know what comes next and in which area from the US administration (as of now). Currently we are living in an uncertain world, hence traditional technical and fundamental parameters may not be the right model to look at current times unless the word uncertainty is removed from the investors mind.

Am I comfortable with the valuations at these levels; the answer is YES. Would I take a bet right now, the answer is NO as the uncertainty is really very high. My systematic investment would continue but the lump sum investment would wait. I will get better opportunities in this volatile time.

From the current level (Nifty was around 23200) expected 5-6% correction (around 22,000); that’s because of PE contraction. If EPS contraction starts then more than 10% correction in Nifty and a below (or around) 20,000 level is triggered so watch this and upcoming earnings carefully. In a challenging environment, we have observed earnings cut by up to 30% and till date we have seen earnings cut by 7%/ 2% for CY25 and CY26 (Bloomberg) from Sep-24.

Where would you hide now - During the UNCERTAIN periods, even the stocks with strong earnings couldn’t stop falling. GDP growth, inflation, core sector growth, and high-frequency indicators (HFIs) suggest that markets may have bottomed out based on valuations, technicals, and fundamentals. However, given the uncertainty surrounding us, we should adopt a cautiously optimistic stance.

India’s long term story is intact: India’s GDP growth is estimated at 6.5% for FY25. The debt-to-GDP ratio is expected to decline by at least 5.1 percentage points from 2024-25 to 2030-31. At some point in time, India could be a place to hide for FPIs.

Stock market live updates today: Shishir Baijal, Chairman and Managing Director, Knight Frank India, on market today

“We anticipate that the RBI will cut the policy repo rate by 25 bps and bring it down to 6% in the upcoming MPC meeting amid easing inflation, with CPI reaching a seven-month low in February 2025, and slowing domestic consumption. Additionally, the strengthening of the rupee against the USD provides the central bank with the flexibility to lower rates without the risk of significant capital outflows.

Considering the persistent liquidity deficit, the RBI is also likely to address liquidity management. A potential reduction in the CRR, currently at 4%, could inject much-needed liquidity into the banking system, boosting banks’ lending capacity and supporting credit flows. These measures are essential to drive a revival in both consumption and investment in the economy.

From a real estate perspective, the transmission of lower rates into reduced borrowing costs can incentivise home buyers, particularly in the affordable housing segment, by making home loans more accessible. Additionally, it would enable developers to secure cheaper credit, fostering increased investments and growth within the sector.

The anticipated rate cut comes amidst heightened global economic vulnerabilities, particularly stemming from US trade tariffs. Elevated tariffs threaten India’s export revenues, posing moderate risks to economic growth. In response, the RBI is likely to uphold an accommodative policy stance, maintaining lower interest rates to stimulate domestic demand and mitigate the adverse effects.”

Stock market live updates today: Vishnu Kant Upadhyay, AVP – Research & Advisory at Master Capital Services, on market movements today

Indian benchmark indices witnessed significant volatility following retaliatory actions by China and other nations in response to the United States imposing reciprocal tariffs on key trading partners, including China and India, on April 2nd. The Nifty50 opened with a sharp gap-down of over 1,100 points, while the BSE Sensex declined more than 5%, opening at 71,449.94. All sectoral indices traded in negative territory, with the metal and IT sectors emerging as the worst performers. Amid escalating trade tariff uncertainties, market volatility is expected to persist in the near term. However, long-term investment opportunities remain viable at current levels. Sectors such as Finance, Oil & Gas, Consumption, and FMCG are likely to offer relative stability for long-term investors. Technically, the Nifty may retest the 21,500 mark, and a decisive break below this level could open the door for further downside towards 21,000. On the upside, resistance is expected near 22,800, where fresh short positions could be considered. All eyes are now on the upcoming RBI monetary policy meeting on Wednesday, where a 25 basis point rate cut is anticipated.

Stock market live updates today: Securitisation soars to a new high of ~Rs 2.35 lakh crore in fiscal 2025: CRISIL

Securitisation volume in India rose 24% on-year to ~Rs 2.35 lakh crore in fiscal 2025, the highest on record, driven by large deals originated by private sector banks and steady fund raising by non-banking financial companies (NBFCs2

This is despite a relatively tepid fourth quarter, when issuances totalled Rs 58,000 crore, well below the Rs 63,000 crore

racked up in the third quarter and Rs 70,000 crore in the second quarter.

Issuance diversity continues to improve with 175 originators in fiscal 2025, compared with165 in fiscal 2024. Besides,

some large NBFCs securitised newer asset classes, while a few others returned after a hiatus.

Says Aparna Kirubakaran, Director, Crisil Ratings, “The share of securitisation by banks increased sharply to

26% in fiscal 2025 from ~5% in fiscal 2024 as a few banks used securitization to manage challenges arising from

high credit-deposit ratios. That, and steady issuances by large vehicle financiers and mortgage lenders helped

offset the decline in volume from microfinance and gold loans.”

Stock market live updates today: Dr. V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services:

“Globally markets are going through heightened volatility caused by extreme uncertainty. No one has a clue about how this turbulence caused by Trump tariffs will evolve. Wait and watch would be the best strategy in this turbulent phase of the market. There are a few things that investors should keep in mind. One, the irrational Trump tariffs will not continue for long. Two, India is relatively better placed since India’s exports to the US as percentage of GDP is only around 2 percent and therefore the impact on India’s growth will not be significant. Three, India is negotiating a Bilateral Trade Agreement with the US and this is likely to be successful resulting in lower tariffs for India.

Domestic consumption themes like financials, aviation, hotels, select autos, cement , defence and digital platform companies are likely to come out relatively unscathed from the ongoing crisis. Trump is unlikely to impose tariffs on pharmaceuticals since he is on the back foot now and, therefore, this segment is likely to show resilience.”

On a tepid note, the Index concluded the trade lower at 22,904, with a strong bearish candle on the weekly chart indicating the dominance of the bears. Given the prevailing global market conditions, it’s likely that the bears will strengthen their grip in the near term. According to GIFT Nifty, the Indian Benchmark Index, Nifty, is expected to open the day with a significant gap-down of over 800 points. This will likely trigger panic selling across the board, and it would be prudent to watch from the fence for a couple of days until some stability is restored in the market.

Surveys show dimming expectations, higher uncertainty due to new federal policies, especially trade.

Uncertainty is high and downside risks have risen, but the economy is still in a good place.

Data shows solid growth, labor market in balance, and inflation much closer to, but still above the 2% goal.

Stock market live updates today: [IIFL NBFCs] BHFL - 4QFY25 pre-quarterly: In-line on growth

    1) BHFL reported a disbursement growth of 25% yoy (+13.4% qoq) – an acceleration from 17% yoy in 3QFY25 and was 3.5%/4% ahead of consensus/IIFLe

    2) However, AUM/loan book came in at 26%/25% yoy – in-line with IIFLe/consensus estimates as repayment rate increased 140bps yoy / 250bps qoq to 29% (ann.). Feb-25 repo rate cut is likely to have driven this elevated portfolio attrition which can impact margins, in our view. We estimate 5bps qoq margin compression for BHFL

    3) Implied BAF’s ex-BHFL AUM growth in 4QFY25 of 4.3% qoq was 40bps lower than on consol basis of 4.7% qoq.
