BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - The first training session of 2025 is in the books for Vermont Green FC, the Boys in Green working out on the pitch Tuesday morning ahead of year four in Burlington. It’s a big year on tap for VGFC, as the club sets its sights on a division title and hopefully a deep playoff run to come with it.
Chris Taylor takes the reins as head coach after spending the first three seasons as an assistant, with former manager Adam Pfeifer shifting exclusively to the sporting director role.
“Just excited to be back,” Taylor said. “I think all of us, we’re kind of counting down the days. So we get the players here and it’s a little bit like an advent calendar for us. Because each day new players arrive and we get to add to the group. But first day, so much quality, so much energy and enthusiasm. So many guys who are just so excited to be here. So it’s always great. It’s great to be connected with everyone and see that excitement to pull on the Vermont Green shirt.”
The side will feature a couple familiar faces for Catamount fans, with guys like Marcell Papp and Ioannis Vassiliou practicing Tuesday. Plus, a handful of Vermont Green vets are back for another go around in what they say is a special place.
“Feels great,” said third-year forward Zach Zengue. “I know the area, I know the fans, I know everyone around and the staff. So it feels great. I feel comfortable. I’ve been waiting for this the whole year. The vibe here is great. It’s amazing.”
“It feels good,” added 2022 VGFC alumnus Owen O’Malley of his return this Summer. “It‘s good to see a bunch of guys come back, you know, like Zengue and Moussa (N’Diaye) and all these guys that, you know, love the club and love what the club stands for. So, you know, I’m happy to be back and I’m happy to lead them in the right direction and kinda show ‘em away a little bit. But, you know, we’re gonna have a fun Summer this year.”
VGFC opens its 2025 campaign at Boston City Sunday evening, with the home opener scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 24th.
