[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Package: libapr1-dev
Version: 1.2.12-4

While checking the results of the archive wide checkbashisms check I've found
a copy of libtool at /usr/share/apr-1.0/build/libtool.

Please don't ship your own copy and depend on libtool and make it a symlink if
really needed.

Thanks.

Regards,

The libtool shipped with the apr package has no tagged configurations
and works without --tag parameter. The libtool from the libtool
package requires --tag, though. Specifying the correct --tag
everywhere would be a larger enterprise. It would have to include all
methods to build apache modules written in both C and C++, and all
other users of apr-config/apu-config. And (at least in principle) apr
supports different libtools that don't support --tag, though I don't
know if that support is still used.

In any case, I don't think it makes sense to change this in Debian.

Just to let you know, apr's libtool copy sets some variables for
programs which are no longer valid on i386, e.g.
RANLIB="i486-linux-gnu-ranlib".  This makes subversion FTBFS[1].

Cheers,
       Sven

Subject: Maybe fixable with apr 1.7
Date: Sat, 29 Aug 2020 11:20:44 +0200
According to the changelog, apr 1.7 adds all the --tag parameters to the
libtool invocations. Maybe this allows this to be fixed. But I won't
change that in the -1 upload because I want the python builddep fix to
make it to testing without problems.

This is not enough. There are many projects that use apr that don't pass
the --tag parameter to libtool. Those would have to be changed, too.
Examples for such projects are apr-util and Apache httpd. And it is not
enough to patch those projects in Debian, they have to be fixed upstream
beacaue we want for example the upstream Apache httpd to be buildable
with Debian's libapr.

So, unless the debian libtool fixes #758317 and works without --tag,
this bug won't be fixed.
