Subject: keyboard-configuration: X keyboard configuration lost after upgrade
Date: Sun, 26 May 2013 14:13:51 +0200
Package: keyboard-configuration
Version: 1.93
Severity: important
Tags: l10n
Hi,
I'm using sid and after an aptitude safe-upgrade, X shows up with english keyboard layout instead of french as it was before.
I tried with gdm3/ligthdm/only startx, and the problems is still here. It seems related to X or udev since the upgrade, because gnome is well set and gives a french keyboard (macbook pro one), and for awesome, my main wm, i have to setxkbmap fr in ~/.xsession to get a french keyboard layout
a few more info :
cat /etc/default/keyboard
# KEYBOARD CONFIGURATION FILE
# Consult the keyboard(5) manual page.
XKBMODEL="macbook78"
XKBLAYOUT="fr"
#XKBVARIANT="mac"
XKBOPTIONS="terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp"
BACKSPACE="guess"
XKBVARIANT="mac"
cat /etc/default/locale
# File generated by update-locale
LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8
I'm still trying to figure out how to get french back at dm greeter
thanks
raphael

No, you don't get to reassign bugs to other people's packages without
explanation.

Hmm... What should I explain? According to the submitter the contents
of /etc/default/keyboard is correct. Or maybe you mean I had to
reassign the bug to some other X package?

debian-x didn't get anything from the submitter, all we have is
https://lists.debian.org/debian-x/2013/05/msg00431.html which doesn't
explain why you think it's an xkb-data bug.

So most window managers and login managers don't get the keyboard right,
however gnome does.
The correct/wrong keyboard setup/information must come from *somewhere*,
but from where?
So one thing the OBR could do to figure out what's going on is to
"strace -f" startx and the gnome startup, figure out which files are
being accessed (only stat, open and mmap calls are of interest I guess)
and then compare the produced lists.
Otherwise, if nobody can figure out what's going on, or the OBR doesn't
care any more either the OBR or the console-setup maintainers can decide
to close the bug, since no way forward can be made unless there's more
info. Or leave it open.
HTH a bit,
*t

Package: keyboard-configuration
Version: 1.113
I maintain a /etc/default/keyboard configuration where capslock is
purged system-wide - I add ',caps:none' at the end of 'XKBOPTIONS'.
Whenever this package is upgraded/reinstalled, my configuration is
overwritten back to the default. From what I can tell, I am correct in
editing this file - so please can this file be left alone unless I
specifically allow it to be altered (e.g. if aptitude wants to change
it, the usual config text UI comes up showing before and after changes
to the file).
Thanks

This is not the expected behaviour. Please send the contents of your
/etc/default/keyboard so I can test.
