Dear Maintainer,

I am reporting this with an high severity, because this can cause hear loss.

On a default install of debian with kde (recommends enabled), when playing music,
when a KDE notification appears, the overall volume goes up to 100%, which can
cause hearing loss.

I have tried to replicate, pressing "test" in systemsettings, for the audio
output of the notifications, and the volume always goes to 100%, regardless of
the initial value.

Sometimes the volume of amarok remains unchanged, and sometimes it goes to 100%
as well.

Since this is probably a very complicated issue that might be caused by pulseaudio,
phonon, vlc as phonon backend or kdelibs, and it will probably take many years to be
fixed, I suggest to ship plasma with a sane default and disable all audio
notifications by default.

This is probably the best solution in the short term. And I don't think this can
wait, since blasting sound at 100% volume when my setting was 12% can be
dangerous.

I hope you will not ignore this.

Best

I remember having similar problem with kde4 knotify
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=324975 and
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=345651. I can still partly reproduce
this with KF5 and gstreamer backend by playing notification and adjusting
the notification volume to 100%. After this the master volume is raised to
100% but all the other streams are lowered to keep the same voume level.

The second upstream bug says that gstreamer backend should manage the
volumes better. Could you try that?

Control: severity -1 important

Hi,

I agree that this bug is important, and I'm aware that it's been around for
quite sometime now, although I thought it was fixed.

Currently, I'm not being able to reproduce it. Digging into the code I found
that the knotifications mangling of the volumes was fixed back in frameworks
5.6, and the kde4 notifications were fixed in kde-runtime 4:15.04. The
notifications I've tested don't trigger a volume change, I've tested this
using the gstreamer backend and the vlc backend.

Could you please provide as much detail as possible with regards to how you
configured the notifications and which notifications are triggering this?

Also please show the output of apt policy kde-runtime, and any other
information that you consider valuable.

Thanks!

Happy hacking,

The problem occurs on my work computer, so it is a bit difficult for
me to debug the issue.

However, I attach the list of my installed packages.

I have done aptitude purge pulseaudio to prevent hear loss, but I
could install it again and not wear the headphones to make some tests.

The notification was a popup from amarok, explaining that if I close
the main window, it will still be running in the tray area.

I had done no configuration to notifications or audio. I had installed
kde-full, and configured themes, keyboard and other programs.

I'm adding some extra information about the bug, using pulseaudio's
configuration flat-volumes = no (in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf) works correctly,
the master volume is used for new applications without a volume
configuration, and the volumes set in the applications are relative to the
master volume.

Using the default flat-volumes = yes, the volume is tweaked on each input
source, that is, the sound card volume is set to the one in the master volume
and then moved to the relative value corresponding to the applications volume,
(in particular for amarok this is done for each reproduced file, which can be
heard at the end of each file as a volume increase).

On the amarok side of things, amarok seems to be ignoring the external volume
changes in his volume control widget, the widget sets the initial value of the
input source volume, and overrides the master volume if the master volume is
less than the one set in the widget.

But at the same time, changing the amarok volume in some other way (using
plasma-pa, kmix, pavucontrol, etc) is frustrating.

This was tested using virt-manager and it's probably behaving worse than how
real hardware behaves. In any case, it would be better if the pulseaudio's
default changes to flat-volumes = no.

On the phonon side of things, using phonon 4.8.3, amarok manages to ignore
most of the events that would produce a notification while it's reproducing
something, as trying to close amarok from the tray icon. Using phonon 4.9.0
(currently in experimental) amarok reacts to most of the events, but still not
to all of them.

When there are two sound sources pulseaudio tries to use the volume of the
loudest sound to mix the other one in relation with their relative volume
levels. What happens here seems to be somewhat different if you are using the
newer phonon or the old one, it seems that the in the new one uses the volume of the
last that the sound cards volumes is tweaked and left
either as it was, or at the maximum or somewhere in the middle, this might be
related with the tweaks that are being produced at the end of each amarok
sound file and the fact the notifications are quite short.

Using the newer phonon this behaviour seems to be sane, as the sound source
uses the last volume level used by default, so no tweaking is necessary.

I still need to test this issue without pulseaudio, but it seems to me that a
good chunk of the problem is solved with the newer phonon.

Happy hacking,

Without pulseaudio notifications are started with the volume from the master
volume, amarok volume widget receives the external changes from kmix, and the
volumes are relative to the master volume.

The volume in the sound card is not changing on every sound input.

Amarok still manages to ignore some windows closing events.

I have no idea of what that means!

Dear Maintainer,

Now even when sound level is set at 0% the notification sound plays at 100%!

Best wishes,

Dear Maintainer,

It is still there with new packagages. Should we try to report it to KDE bugs

Best wishes,
John

Subject: Some new data

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Yesterday pulseaudio got installed again on my system.

I have noticed that basically, when I press the keys for volume+ and
volume- on my keyboard,
in that screen only the virtualbox and amarok sound levels change,
while the notification remains stuck at maximum (it was at maximum
when i opened the mixer).

If I lower it manually, it remains lowered, doesn't move with the
others when I change the volume.

I suppose this is the issue.

I'll now remove PA again, since I don't trust that volume bar to stay
where I put it, the moment that a notification will actually come.

¡Hola!

All these issues seem to be caused by the pulseaudio default value
"flat-volumes = yes" (see /etc/pulse/daemon.conf). I strongly suggest to
change it to flat-volumes = no by default (even some upstream maintainers seem
to agree [1]), this is already the default in ubuntu and arch.

For the users affected by this, please set flat-volumes = no in
/etc/pulse/daemon.conf or in the ~/.config/pulse/daemon.conf file.

Happy hacking,
