Why am I writing my own database system instead of using an existing one?
My last job was to work on a proprietary, in house database, and while the case for it wasn't quite as strong as when it was originally written, it still did things that no external offering did that were considered important to our business. I probably wouldn't want to repeat the experience, but I learnt a lot there, and that company is wildly successful, not least because they make truly strategic decisions about buy or build.
