The Strangeness of Our Animal Bonds (newyorker.com)

The article mentions a series of movies that similarly make clear the potential depth and richness of animal lives, like My Octopus Teacher, or Jane. For anyone interested in similar stories, or resonated with the message of the article, I’d recommend Gunda, a new documentary about the life of a pig on a Scandinavian farm.

When I was a child, I thought every animal should be my pet.

Decades later, I'm amazed this works at all.

After living with parrots for a couple years I'm less surprised, I strongly suspect that the behavioral traits our respective societies require are very similar.

If you are patient and attentive, almost any animal can become pet and friend.

My short list of experiences: spiders, box beetles, lice, sparrow, cat...

There are authors that really work to imagine the animal mind. Richard Adams continued to write wonderful books after “Watership Down”, and John Crowley wrote “Ka” which was my favourite book in 2017.
