Ask HN: How often do you get a haircut and how much does it cost you?

I retired in 2015 and since then I have clippered my hair using the no1 blade about every two weeks and have not shaved my beard. Hence I now look like gandalf the grey with bald head.

Here in the UK most high streets I visit have been unudated with barbers shops over recent years and in my local high street alone, which is about 3/4 mile in length, has seven barber shops. All of my local barbers are either Turkish, Bulgarian or from that region of the world, There is one Iranian Barber too. They charge between £8.00 to £15.00 for a quick trim. No scissor work just clippers and comb.

When I was a younger man and working in a professional psychotherapeutic environment I was expected to be fairly smart and presentable at work.

Barbers were a rare beast when I was young and most of my friends and I used a hairdressers, which were scissors only hairdressers. Hair cuts back then were £20-£30 which I did every month or so.

I bought a Flowbee in 2009 for $83 total. I cut my hair around once every 3 weeks, so I have paid 34 cents per cut so far, ignoring electricity cost of running a vacuum and the Flowbee for a few minutes.

During COVID I let my hair grow long and end up with a ponytail. Then I was getting it cut about every 5-6 weeks. But as the prices go up (most recent AUD40), I'm letting it grow longer but trimming it not grow long enough for a ponytail. It's yet another area for experimentation.

During COVID I had a bit of a barber-crisis, as perhaps we all did. I had been seeing a guy who charged $12 but was prickly, at least 85, and I just felt like I could do better.

So I bounced around awhile, but when the lockdowns hit, haircutters were hit particularly hard, because they weren't quite "essential" but perhaps they were.

I had been with a chain-unisex store, but when I finally got in again they said they wouldn't touch my beard, and I'd need to keep a mask on at all times. Well forget that! I need constant care of my beard just as much as my head. So I found a Black-owned business that was pretty much anti-mask and I was really satisfied for a long time. The owner was a teddy bear who used to work in IT so we had great chats. He would pamper me with an exquisitely meticulous cut, like cutting hair was all he's ever done in his life. (I've never caught COVID.)

Eventually I did make another change and now I'm at a barber school. The price is right, I get a different person every time, and it's absolutely a gamble whether I get a good or bad cut, but I love to serve as a student's homework; what can I say?

I lost my hair early and I just shave my head with a Braun Series 9.

I had a cheaper Braun till the charge pins broke (Part of why I got the 9 is it doesn't have the same style chare dock) but was not happy with it, my face always slightly hurt and it took too long to do my head.

Once when I was young And in the care of laundanum I woke and found my hair Had lost desire to be there

A choice decision then Birds have clipped wings Ten pound, checkbook, and a pen Wahl razor and, well, other things

I cut one hair per day in the morning with a pair of scissors. I mean, overall it takes a really long time, but it's free.

I also clip one fingernail per week. Constantly.

25-30 AUD every six weeks or so.

10 Euroes every 6-8 months.
