Heh. That's just building in the aliases that originated in Prototype.js, which offered $ as gEBId sugar and $$ as one for querySelectorAll. Opera actually decided to go with $ as querySelectorAll, a la jQuery, which IMO makes a bit more sense. This is one of the ways that Prototype.js had a huge effect.
