I did this: I studied pure math in uni because “it could be used for anything.”
I hugely regret this.
1. I didn’t find it that interesting, and so I don’t feel like I got much out of it.
2. I found later that I learn math much better when I can “hang” the ideas off practical examples. For example, I learned math for the sake of understanding deep learning far better than I ever understood math before.
Ultimately, I think it’s far more important to study something that interests you, and to learn the tools you need as you go.
