It's interesting, but not entirely surprising, that Trump is kowtowing to Putin and giving Putin everything he wants. Could it be something to do with the Kompromat the Kremlin reportedly has on him?

Putin would like to restore the former Soviet union, he said that the collapse of the Soviet union was a catastrophe. The war in Ukraine is the beginning of Putin trying to rectify this. So if he wins the war in Ukraine, about half of Europe will likely be next. He will likely want to move fast, not waiting 4 years for Trump to be possibly voted out and possible US opposition after that.

<< Trump is kowtowing to Putin and giving Putin everything he wants.

Alternative interpretation:

Or.. you know, focusing on the interest of US, which does not automatically mean sending unlimited amount of money/gear/intelligence to Ukraine. After all, Ukraine is not part of NATO. There are no obligations to follow here. And Russia as an unfriendly country in future conflicts may complicate things further.

Yes. There is an argument to be made about what happens afterwards in baltics, but those countries are part of NATO, which is a different consideration.

>There are no obligations to follow here

The US did talk Ukraine into giving up its nukes in return for helping to protect it. Bit of an oopsie by Ukraine there.

Is it an accurate presentation of facts or a talking point? The nukes were not 'theirs' to begin with.

It's a simplification of reality. The nukes belonged to the Soviet Union of which Ukraine was a part. Mearsheimer to his credit said at the time Ukraine should keep some so as to avoid the situation we now have.

I would have expected Trump to stand up for the interests of the US and all those things.

But Trump went a bit further here - praising Putin, making Putin out to be the victim and seemingly mocking those who see Russia as the bad guy .

Also, the fact he parroted many of the Kremlin talking points speaks for itself.

Interests of the US? More like the intersts of Putin's Russia.

<< Interests of the US? More like the intersts of Putin's Russia.

I will attempt a good faith response here. Have you considered the possibility that there is a non-zero amount of issues, where interests of US and Russia are aligned? Do you think you could name one such issue? I am asking mostly to see if you can take consider the question before you answer reflexively.
