A writing exercise sharpens your mind, it forces you to think clearly through problems, gives you practice in both letting your thoughts flow onto paper, and in post-editing those thoughts into a coherent structure that communicates better. You can throw it away afterwards, you'll still be a better writer and thinker than before the exercise.
