I think this could be accomplished without creating a new system of ___domain names by using visually similar non-ascii characters in an IDN[1].

"food in chicago.com" becomes "food⋅in⋅chicago.com" becomes "xn--foodinchicago-lj4hc.com"

IIRC these "visually similar" characters cannot be registered anymore due to widespread abuse in phishing/spam emails (päypa1.com, e.g).


They can, but there are limitations. For example, ä can only be used in certain countries (for example, a country where a large number of people speak a language that uses ä).
