> the Wikimedia Foundation was carrying out political activities via the volunteer-led Wikimedia Taiwan chapter

Is this true?

It is true. So much as stating that the Republic of China (Taiwan) is a de facto independent country with its own territory, military, government, and permanent populace is political. The existence of many Wikipedia pages about Taiwan that reflect that is an inherently political activity (from CCP perspective).

Isn't everything political these days? Advocating against govt backdoors is "political". Advocating for LGBT rights is "political". Joining WIPO is political, because they clearly want to influence how intellectual property laws are developed/written.

I imagine this article doesn’t include the whole story and is probably biased. Perhaps China was more specific about whatever Wikimedia did.

This is a funny joke when it is not about silencing people.

Nuance? In a discussion about China? How dare you.

The result would be the San Francisco font... rendered terribly.

Yes, I have tried SanFransisco and the results were terrible. Also I didn't want to look at information rendered by a stolen font.

The "SF Pro" font family is directly downloadable from Apple and free for personal use. https://developer.apple.com/fonts/

I would argue that it can. The question is if an individual finds it unethical or not, not if it's being stolen. Legally speaking at least.

The argument is that for something to be "stolen" it has to be missing afterwards. An unauthorized copy is copyright infringement, legally speaking, not theft.

Words mean something and there is a reason why right holders tried to coin this (pillaging, murdering) piracy to give it a bad connotation. Then the various "pirate parties" said if you want to call large swaths of the population pirates, then we will be taking that word from you (somewhat similar to pride movements).

No contest. You've convinced me.

For the record, I have little to no issue with "unauthorized copies", for the most part. I just disagreed with some of the phrasing.

Interesting argument.

Secrets can be stolen, but they're not missing after.

Spies steal secrets, not copyright infringement them :)

> Secrets can be stolen, but they're not missing after.

You technically lose the secret in this case, since it's not a secret anymore.

Espionage is also not theft in a legal sense

> The argument is that for something to be "stolen" it has to be missing afterwards.

...assuming the word has only one usage -- which it does not. The word can also be correctly used to describe an act of appropriation.

"Stolen" is not necessarily a synonym of "theft"

> ...assuming the word has only one usage -- which it does not.

To me it sounds like propaganda against information sharing, by coining negative words, like "piracy":

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_infringement#%22Pira...

Digital information cannot be stolen.

The courts ruled on this last century. At least as far back as the 80's when people were stealing HBO from satellites with TVRO dishes in their backyard.

It's time to stop beating that horse.

The courts ruled it a crime, they did not rule it to be theft. Presenting it as such is a politically motivated distortion of the the facts.

I’m astonished by the amount of people who choose to leak code on 4chan.

As opposed to where? It is one of the few platforms that would allow a post like this other than security info forums, but if you aren't looking for credits on one of those 4chan is about all that is left.

There's literally nowhere else to leak things like this without removal (major platforms) or tampering by the administration (wikileaks et al).

It is. 50% of youth unemployment in Spain for example.

Oh I wasn't aware that was purely caused by Unions!! And you chose the EU country with one of, if not THE highest unemployment rate.

Every country has issues. To say that Unions don't work when the EU has a strong union culture, and then scapegoat other issues in random EU countries is intellectually dishonest.

Spain has insane unemployment rates because of generations of poorly thought out policies, not unions. They basically had a similar setup to Greece where tons of people don't pay taxes, and it survives heavily off tourism and produces few other things to make up for the tourism economy. Any country that generates MOST of its economy from tourism is going to have a rough time. We've seen it time and time again.

None of this proves the EU is a hell hole, and it has no inherent relation to unions.

That’s interesting, thank you.

And what’s India currently?

World's largest democracy, unlike China. Among the largest economies in the world, nowhere as large as China but it will get there. Overall Free press and judiciary, unlike China. A consititution that guarantees rights for all people, unlike China. Minorities are free to worship , unlike China which is mass raping Uighurs. India is a very imperfect work in progress.

Also the economy which is slowing down at the fastest. About the rights of minorities etc, less said the better.

Every single democratic institution has been compromised - including the parliament and the SC.

Have you seen the news from last couple of years? Under the current government, India has lost much of that.

At this rate, India will become worse version of China, without the economic development.

Sorry to say, it has become more democratic by going after paid actors who create riots, upending the Bollywood drug nexus, and much more. Not everyone is clean but the top brass of the government is doing everything to take out license Raj and remove drug sponsored terror money.

The fact that you are so willing to believe all the propaganda put out by the government without refusing to look at the facts is the issue. Even about the so called drug-nexus, you seem to have not noticed the following:

1. That we are soon going to be #1 when it comes to Covid cases worldwide.

2. That our economy has been in the worst shape since pretty much any time in the last 60+ years

3. That China holds well over 1000sq kms of land (the combined size of Mumbai and Chennai)

4. That the parliament has basically suspended any democratic functions and is passing bills willy nilly with no discussions

5. That unemployment is the highest it has been in decades

But lets keep focusing on Bollywood - just as this govt intends for you to.

These have nothing to do with free press, judiciary and places where minorities can worship.

In the world's second most populated country...incidents have been happening all the time. Except now its the media reporting and amplifying and sensationalizing the issues to get TRP and clicks.

Could you properly list down what has India lost with references?

Can you not do your own research?

I did and my results don't match with the parent's comments. Hopefully, the parent will enlighten us with their thesis on the topic.

> since we can freely trade information over the public internet

No we can’t.

Don't be pedantic, you're doing it right now.

He's right, it is a pretty big if, since storage space and compute power are basically free for NSA/CIA (and they have shown they don't care about privacy laws or the 4th amendment) you can safely assume all your traffic and data is stored away somewhere for future usage against you. If you're in Europe you are probably a bit safer.

There are many things you can’t post online because you’d get in trouble.

Many people including me use the browser maximised all the time.

I don’t understand the sarcasm. Those resources cost Oracle money, and they give them for free to researchers. A mention in return is very reasonable.

Not sure how it came out as totally sarcastic. I genuinely believe that they didn't have to do that, and that it is laudable. The sarcasm was more for the corporate greasiness of the carefully-considered branded phrases, not for the act itself.

You are comparing European culture to Anglo culture. That’s pears to oranges. Not saying one is better than the other, but they work differently.
