the AI will just start scamming older people

I wonder if American's know how much goodwill was destroyed by this president.

I hear a lot from my friends how we need to boycot USA, don't buy iphones etc...

Now, most people would probably still buy iphones, but people changed their favourable view of USA pretty quickly.

And I am talking about Poland, which was probably one of the most pro USA country in EU

"Americans" is a big group. A very large fraction of us are certainly aware that the country is burning every bridge at a record pace. The size of that fraction depends on which region of the country you live in.

Take a look at the map of Free Trade Agreements of EU and USA. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_trade_agreements_of_the_U... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_trade_agreements_of_the_E...

I might be wrong and biased, but maybe EU gains the most from this US vs world trade war?

Yes. The USA is setting Europe up, unintentionally, to replace it as an economic, cultural, and - within the next decade - military power.

how is sentencing for corruption connected to defensive democracy?

The headline really should be Le Pen guilty of embezzlement, ineligible to run for public office for X years.

Seems like a reasonable policy we should adopt in the US…

Wouldn't matter. Trump is already a felon and should be ineligible. We have at least two parallel lehal systems in the US, probably more. The more "important" you are the less the rules are able to touch you. That's the american way.

This aligns with America's original "sin", rule of law versus a disguised aristocracy. It's always there beneath the surface.

People find the dream of hitting the jackpot far more appealing than creating a genuinely classless society.

Exactly. For better or worse, and whether or not people realize that we have basically inherited and mutated the English class system, except instead of being defined by your birth lineage, it's now defined by how much money you have. I guess you could call that egalitarian in the way that the British call their private schools, "public schools", meaning that anyone with an adequate amount of money is allowed to attend them.

The Wikipedia article has "deprival of the rights of individuals and parties from running for election" listed as a method. So I assume the prison/fine part of the sentencing wouldn't really be defensive democracy but barring her from office is. (Don't think I would feel positively about that in the U.S. but nonetheless the concept is there.)

Applying the laws regardless of if that person is a political candidate.

That's the case in any working democracy. Defensive democracy is a different conception, e.g. the German constitution allows for party prohibitions. In a defensive democracy, rules like party prohibitions are ideally not applied by an ordinary court but by an independent political organ. To give an example from Germany, the German Supreme Court is an independent political organ that serves as a power division element to check the work of the two parliaments for constitutionality. The "highest" ordinary court is the Bunderverwaltungsgericht.

Hehe, now let’s wait and see how they grapple with the fact that you can’t have both! It‘s either criminal use of EU funds or defensive democracy, unless you’re drenched in kool-aid.

The verdict was clearly and unambiguously about a criminal abuse of EU funds and nothing else. It's noteworthy that a list of people was sentenced for it, not just Le Pen.

sure, and just 4 days prior to that totally neutral verdict another french court ruled that political bans were legal. what a coincidence, what a convenience. something that was never even considered legal in France just “clearly and unambiguously” fell into that judge’s hands days ahead.

No, there’s nothing noteworthy here, especially for a crime Le Pen didn’t committed herself and which every single party of France is guilty of.

Don’t choke on that kool aid!

You're talking to the wrong person since I would fully support a prohibition of the RN if France's democracy was as combative as it should be. I just don't think this played a role here. Politicians complaining bitterly about being persecuted for crimes they've committed is not a new thing, though, they always believe they deserve special treatment.

I want to highlight this blog article which in my opinion gives more actionable advice than all of the books listed (I read 6/8 of those) on the topic of having good social life

https://www.neelnanda.io/blog/mini-blog-post-23-taking-socia...

tldr; taking social initiative is like a cheat code.

The easiest way to make friends is to start organizing. I started applying this approach to my social life and I created two new friends groups from scratch.

1. Me and my brother started organizing lasertag matches. Basically anyone is invited. We even post open invitation to all our friends. Right now we have 20 people in our group chat and we do lasertags + beers once a month.

2. I created a group of friends from highschool - like a reunion shit but once every month. When I reached out to people everyone was hyped. I had only one of these meetings atm but everyone was happy and said they want more. We will be having a second one soon.

If I needed more friends that's what I would be focusing on. Organizing a cyclic get together of people. It's like a cheat code for having a lot of friends.

Right now I am a bit of time constrained but I look forward to organizing something different in the future.

Yeah, when I was younger, I had a kickball mailing list running on my mail server early 2000s. It only had kickball traffic, anytime someone wanted to play a game they would post, their phone number and time and ___location of a game and people would just show up.

Would organize larger games with more notice. Anyone who watched us for more than 15 seconds would be forced to play. If they had fun, we made them sign up.

can you share how are you using this? Production / side projects?

Would you recommend it for side projects?

GP is probably not himself using Zero because he’s the CEO of Electric, which also makes a sync engine: https://electric-sql.com

thank you for mentioning! I have been reading a lot about sync engines and never saw Clojure Electric being mentioned here on HN!

so... what do people that want to have sync engines do?

I want to try it for hobby project and I think I will go the route of just one way sync (from database to clients) using electric sql and I will have writes done in a traditional way (POST requests).

I like the idea of having server db and local db in sync, but what happens with writes? I know people say CRDT etc... but they are solving conflicts in unintuitive ways...

I know I probably sound uneducated, but I think the biggest part of this is still solving conflicts in a good way, and I don't really see how you can solve those in a way that works for all different domains and have it "collapsed" as the author says

just approach... Aproach in public places, where it's bright best timeing is during the day near other people... If you think she is creeped out say goodbies, most of the interactions you will either click in first seconds or get shut down. Don't be intimidating, don't touch her, chat with her for few minutes then ask her to go for a date... If you seriously decide to do that you will be surprised how many women are available... Most of the receptive ones I found where single and not on dating apps for various reasons... So basically you literally have zero competition, as those girls are not actively dating (especially when out of university)
