ARIENZO Italy.

Remains of a villa in the province of Caserta in the area of Suessula. Well preserved in part, the villa was built during the first half of the 2d c. A.D., but was destroyed by a flood in the 4th c. Thus far the complex, which is a short distance from the Via Appia, has been excavated on only a modest scale. There are remains of a nymphaeum with niches between half-columns, two rooms with mosaic floors, and some remains of painted decoration, all dating from the time of

Hadrian. W. JOHANNOWSKY
