Τὸ πεδίον—the Attic plain, as c. 20, 1. This resumes from c. 47. παρῆλθον—after ravaging the plain (contrast c 19), and reaching the north-east parts of it that lie between Mt. Parnes and Pentelicon (Brilessus), they worked their way down the south-east coast district of Attica. Πάραλον— = the part of Attica stretching south of Mt. Hymettus and Brauron right down to C. Sunium. Λαυρείου —the mines here, which were an important source of revenue to Athens (Aesch. Persae, 237 ἀργύρου πηγή τις αὐτοῖς ἐστι, θησαυρὸς χθονός), were farmed out on hereditary leases. See Kennedy's Demosth., Intr. to the speech against Pantaenetus. [ οὗ]—Intr. p. xxxix. ᾗ πρὸς Π. ὁρᾷ—partem quae spectat ad P. Cf. c. 93, 4. ἔπειτα δὲ—c. 4, 2. The addition of δὲ emphasizes the antithesis.
Καὶ τότε—with ὤν. Pericles had entered on a fresh year of office in Hecatombaeon 430 (Intr. p. lxv.) since the last mention of him as Strategus. περὶ τοῦ μὴ—c. 22, 1.
