ἐπὶ τοῦτο—sc. ξυνήκετε: iv. 18, 1, ἐφ̓ νῦν ἀφιγμένοι ὑμᾶς αἰτούμεθα. There are abundant instances to justify the manuscript reading in iv. 3, 2, ἐπὶ τοῦτο γὰρ ξυνέπλευσε, though most editors alter it to ἐπὶ τούτῳ. The Melians agree to the discussion.

μέν—answered by μέντοι. ξυγγνώμηiv. 61, 4, τοὺς Ἀθηναίους πλεονεκτεῖν πολλὴ ξυγγνώμη. ἐν τῷ τοιῷδε καθεστῶτας—‘in a position like ours’.

ἐπὶ πολλὰ τρέπεσθαι—ch. 111, 14. i. 20, fin., ἐπὶ τὰ ἑτοῖμα τρέπονται. δοκοῦντας—‘in thought’: ‘minus invidiosa voce sententiam exprimunt eandem quam Athenienses verbo ὑπονοεῖν’ (Krüger).
