Maronēa
(
Μαρώνεια). A town on the southern coast of Thrace, on the
lake Ismaris, belonged originally to the Cicones, but afterwards colonized
from Chios. It was celebrated for its excellent wine, and is mentioned by Homer as the
residence of Maron, son of Evanthes, grandson of Dionysus and Ariadné, and priest
of Apollo.
