A Disinterested patriot.--A Boston journal, quoting the allusion of another paper to the fact that Mr. Whiting, Solicitor of the War Department, worked without pay, says:
The statement that “Mr. Whiting is a rich man, and can afford to do all he has magnanimously agreed to,” somewhat detracts from the merit of the sacrifice he has actually made.
We happen to know that upon entering the service of the Government he was compelled to reduce his establishment here, which had been supported by a princely income from his profession, and practise the economy which many wealthy men who claim to be patriots only preach.
