Balch, George Beall, 1821-

Naval officer; born in Tennessee, Jan. 3, 1821. He entered the navy in 1837: engaged in the war against Mexico, and was wounded in a naval engagement at Shanghai, China. He was engaged actively and successfully in the South Atlantic blockading squadrons and in other naval operations. He became rear-admiral in 1878, and retired in 1883.
