Edwards, Oliver, 1835-

Military officer; born in Springfield, Mass., Jan. 30, 1835; was commissioned first lieutenant in the 10th Massachusetts Volunteers at the outbreak of the Civil War, and was promoted brigadier-general, May 19, 1865, for “conspicuous gallantry.” He received the surrender of Petersburg, Va., and commanded Forts Hamilton and Lafayette, in New York Harbor, during the draft riots of .1863. He was mustered out of the army in 1866.
