In 1894 he was honored by appointment as chief of police, an office in which he has demonstrated notable ability. Not long after the close of the war he assisted in organizing the Congaree Mounted Rifles, of which he served four years as second lieutenant.

L. T. H. Daniel

L. T. H. Daniel was born in Laurens county, S. C., July 1, 1841, the son of James W. Daniel, a native of Laurens county, who during the civil war was in the State service guarding prisoners at Florence, and who is now a resident of Abbeville. His wife, the mother of this subject, was Eliza Anderson, of Laurens county, the daughter of Thomas Anderson. Mr. Daniel was reared and received his education in Laurens county, was engaged in teaching when the war began, and on that account was exempt. However, in December, 1864, he joined the Fourth regiment, South Carolina State troops, under Capt. George F. Anderson, and served until the close of the war on the South Carolina coast. He took part in the battles at Pocotaligo and White Point and was in the retreat with Johnston's army as far as Raleigh. His command returned to South Carolina and was disbanded at Spartanburg at the close of the war. After his return home, he resumed his profession of teaching, in which he continued until 1893. In 1896 he was elected school commissioner of Laurens county, which position he now holds. He was married, on July 13, 1861, to Miss Lizzie Ballentine, who died October 28, 1889. On February 14, 1892, he married Miss Jane Chandler. He has eight children: William Arthur, David Wistar, John Carlisle, James Walter, L. T. H., Jr., Claudius Erskine, Ozella and Laura A. David Wistar, John Carlisle and James Walter are all graduates of Wofford college; L. T. H., Jr., is a student at Wofford college and Claudius Erskine is a student at the Citadel academy. David W., the second son, is now a member of the faculty of Clemson college.
