The company volunteered in response to the call of Governor Letcher, for one year, at the expiration of which it enlisted for the war. On the 24th of May, 1861, the company left for the Peninsula, as a part of the Third Virginia, commanded by Colonel Thomas P. August.
After the battle of Big Bethel the regiment was known as the Fifteenth.
