[correspondence of the Richmond Dispatch.]
the 68th regiment--change of quarters — their destination, &c.
Abingdon,Va., Jan. 4, 1862.
I have only time this morning to announce a most gratifying fact — that the 56th Regiment will leave Abingdon at 10 o'clock, A. M. by special train for Bowling Green.
We go by Knoxville, Chattanooga, Nashville, and thence to our destination.
The friends of members of the 56th in writing letters, therefore will direct them accordingly.
This change of destination has been as sudden as it is agreeable, and the chivalrous spirits which compose Col. Slaughters command will vindicate on the battle field the wisdom of the authorities in sending them to Bowling Green instead of Pound Gap and Prestonsburg.
The idea of becoming a portion of Sydney Johnston's splendid army is bewildering, when our escape from the dread march to General Marshall is remembered.
As the trip will consume four or five days I will write, probably, from Chattanooga.
At any rate, you will hear from ‘"Occasional"’ frequently when he arrives at Bowling Green. Occasional.
