--The New York Freeman's Journal noticing the death of Rosecrans's Chief of Staff, says:

‘ In our paper of October 4th we published a short extract from a long letter of this distinguished officer, asking if an organized system of prayers for peace could not be augured in the country --He hated this war. He knew, and he wrote us at length, of its atrocities and of its wickedness.
