Richard H. Jackson, for many years a grocer in this city, appeared before the
Mayor last Saturday to answer the charge of stealing $33 from
Patrick Quinn, on the 12th inst.
Quinn stated that he purchased $2 worth of whiskey of
Jackson, and after paying for it accidentally left his pocket-book and money on the counter.
After an absence of fifteen minutes he returned to the grocery and demanded his money, but failed to get it.--
Jackson proved by one witness that
Quinn was partially intoxicated when he came into his store; that he had no pocket-book in his hand when he paid for the whiskey; and that if he left his money on the counter, as alleged, there were a number of persons passing in and out of the house, who could readily have taken it. The
Mayor discharged the accused.
