A Market thief,

who gave his name as John, and professed to be the slave of David Davids, but afterwards admitted that he was a Louisiana free negro, and that he came here three years ago, was arrested last Saturday morning and taken before the Mayor on charge of stealing six pounds of butter from Jacob, a marketman. This black impelled at the market-house Friday morning, purchased the butter, as he said, for his master, and, promising to return with the pot and the pay, failed to do either. Jacob saw and arrested him in the market on Saturday. The Mayor sent him to prison to answer, and will probably destroy his taste for fresh butter before he turns him loose.
