Yankee justice.
It is said that the large community of Yankee prisoners at
Andersonville, Georgia, have established tribunals of justice among themselves, and that they lately hung five or six of their number for theft.
We should not be above learning a lesson from Yankees.
If they hang one another for stealing, why should we not hang them when they steal from us ? It is an old saying: ‘"Set a thief to catch a thief;"’ and, after the Andersonville illustration, we must perceive that no one so well understands how to punish thieves as those who are thieves themselves.
Here is a large colony of robbers, most of whom have been engaged in ransacking Southern houses and loading themselves with plunder, solemnly deciding that stealing is a capital offence and deserves death by the rope.
The Commandant ought to obtain certified copies of the judicial record and supply one to each of our cavalry commanders.
Whenever they catch a robbing party, let them try them under the
Yankee Code, as administered at the Old Bailey at
Andersonville.
