Police duty.
--When the government of the city was turned over to the civil authorities,
Mr. Albert K. Crump was the only officer sworn in who was authorized to perform police duty, and this he was rendered competent to do by virtue of his position as High Constable.
We mean by this that it was necessary for the
Mayor to have an officer to summon witnesses, bring prisoners from the jail to the court-house, and, in a, word, to attend to the minuteæ which always attaches to that very popular tribunal, the
Mayor's Court.
Mr. Crump was deputed by
Mayor Saunders to perform this duty, and he has done it up to yesterday to the entire satisfaction of the
Mayor.
We deem it but justice to an efficient officer to mention these facts, because the duties appertaining to his position as High Constable are quite as heavy as one man ought to attend to.
